geoffvalenti
Don't feed the troll is a development from "trolling" I remember the early usenet days, Now if you want to read skilled trollers you really ought to go back through the archives about 12 years or so. Some of those guys had it off to a fine art and then some
Jake
getting critised for being a non geek!! lol, kinda reminds me of my Ex gf's little brother and his mates, sniggering between them when i asked them about internet stuff and i didnt know! like i was the sad one!! lol I wasn't criticising you. Although IMO it's amusing that somebody on the net is complaining about net culture. Thing is, a lot of the guys that read /. are IT Pros and are sat in front of a computer all day, and often all evening too. They're bound to know more net culture than the average casual internet user. It's a bit like calling Chris Wilson a Spanner Geek.
Matt H
Slashdot I suppose is very geeky really at the end of the day.. and a lot of the humour is self contained, but still provides the odd giggle now and then... Much like http://www.theregister.co.uk I can appreciate it that the place might be funny, but its these seemingly un-funny phrases which have seemingly obtained a cult status which is scrambling my head!?! i just dont get it! geoffvalenti
You would get it if you happened to want to be part of it Matt. It's no big deal, just a bit of a clique, that you haven't chosen to join. I wouldn't worry about it mate
JustGav
I can appreciate it that the place might be funny, but its these seemingly un-funny phrases which have seemingly obtained a cult status which is scrambling my head!?! i just dont get it! It is like the clap I suppose, you either read it once and it sticks, or you just pass over it.. As Jake said, a few of us are IT guys, and to be honest, I read to see what the latest gadget/method/hardware sort of thing is out... and oh yeah, when I'm bored and I've read everything here. sdavies
Well - it is like posting on a pure IT geek forum how funny an EFMIC is - I posted no1boyracers shennanigans to a friend and he just didn't get it ... some of those guys don't do cars - we find it funny... they look at you with WTF expressions. It is just what you know and live with. To a huge net user base those things are funny.

sdavies
p.s. Some of the Chuck Norris Jokes.. Chuck himself finds the whole thing very amusing (I guess the PR rocks). Natalie Portman - I missed out on that gag but there were several sites around that dedicated them selves to doing "pornalikes" and photoshopped nasties with her in - I think this is where she got the legendary /. accolade. Matt H
You would get it if you happened to want to be part of it Matt. It's no big deal, just a bit of a clique, that you haven't chosen to join. I wouldn't worry about it mate well thats just it, i havent seen any examples of where Natalie Portman could be funny, all i know is that "Natalie Portman is funnny" But why, my intention of this thread was i suppose for people to say, "well back in 1993, somebody said something about Natalie Portman and it was funny and then everyone said stuff about her and then it caught on" But ive not found anything like that, just something saying Natalie Portman (as a word is funny), like someone just posting the name Natalie Portman, and the entire geek community falls about in fits of laughter? Any examples would be good? P.s the more i think about it, the more i think the whole Natalie Portman thing has been derived from her role in Leon, which would seem a little pedoephilic?! Matt H
Think of the answers to "What does the red button do?" on mkivsupra.net o.k, but the red button relates to our supras, how does natalie portman relate to a computer?!!!!!!! Do you no get me on that? they are seemingly irrelevant topics?!

No he is seen as... erm.. Tongue in cheek - HARD AS NAILS!? martial Arts Hard man - it is like making jokes about McGyver (s) - being able to make a tank out of a few egg cartons a tin of baked beans and some sticky backed plastic~!? No doubt the guy is pretty tough - but it is the corny side of things mixed in with the hard man nature... kinda destroys the funny side of it trying to explain

Konrad
P.S. 1337 ... again... if you don't know what it means/is you never were meant to (Didn't you ever watch Hackers?) I haven't seen "Hackers" or w/e but i belive it was from word "Elite" or shorter "leet" used in like 1000000 online MMORPG games

Look up "leet speak". I was trying to find a common frame of reference where the term elite/leet was used
