Matt H
Bare with me on this, Ive was looking for some info on the progress of a film, and ended up clicking on a link to a page where someone wrote this on a post: 1. (cant remember what it was! 2. ??? 3. Profit Someone else then had a go about trolling?!? Then someone explained that this phrase was a big geeky type on going joke related to something called slashdot?! I was intrigued So i googled the first bit and got taken to a wikipedia entry about this slashdot. which apparently (so ive gathered) is one of the first forum type set ups. Its states the following: As Slashdot has existed for so many years, it has developed its own subculture, especially running jokes and gags. Among these include: Goatse Natalie Portman "Hot Grits" Troll In Soviet Russia... Al Gore References, He "invented the internet". when the subject is the internet. Chuck Norris "Imagine a Beowulf cluster of those" "You must be new here." "But does it run Linux?" trolls and other Slashdot trolling phenomena I, for one, welcome our new * overlords I , you insensitive clod! 1) 2) ??? 3) Profit!!! Defective by design (referring to Windows Vista) Additionally, the ID of the Slashdot user is sometimes regarded as a sign of how l337 the user is, although this is not taken very literally. Having a user ID that is a prime number or other significant mathematical number is also valued. Some people have successfully sold their Slashdot ID (usually because it was a low 4 digit or smaller), although the website's policy on this isn't exactly clear. Slashdot assigns user ID numbers in the order that the user registered, so the lower the user ID, the longer they have been a registered user, and thus (implicitly) the more experience they have in the computer field. :search: So we have a culture thing with some on running gags, but im sitting here thinking is it just me, or is Natalie Portman or Chuck Norris really not that funny? And why would anyone want to buy a slashdot ID thats a prime number? is the world really this sad? Is Slashdot that big?!?! ive never heard of it? So, im rather confused as to what the whole things all about but im intrigued to know? Any ideas as to why and of the above is funny? what’s trolling? :search: my heads mangled now! geoffvalenti
FYI, Trolling is posting an inflammatory post in the hope that someone will "take the bait" Derived from the fishing term, where you drag a bait behind a boat waiting for a fish to bite. Jake
Is Slashdot that big?!?! ive never heard of it? You're kidding, right?
Lewis
slashdot is a huge tech site, yes it has it's own humour and you need to pay a fair bit of time there to get it sometimes. Trolling is the act of visiting a forum and making posts mostly to provoke. Prime numbers are "1337" as are binaries. TBH, I read the articles but don't contribute to the community. Jake
Prime numbers are "1337" as are binaries. Even though 1337 isn't a prime.
JustGav
Slashdot I suppose is very geeky really at the end of the day.. and a lot of the humour is self contained, but still provides the odd giggle now and then... Much like http://www.theregister.co.uk
Matt H
You're kidding, right? if i was kidding, i would of said a horse walks into a bar, to which the bar man says; whys the long face? seriously tho, no i havent, jeeze, getting critised for being a non geek!! lol, kinda reminds me of my Ex gf's little brother and his mates, sniggering between them when i asked them about internet stuff and i didnt know! like i was the sad one!! lol

Matt H
so ive do a bit more digging and found the answers to what some of these seemigly meaningless phrases are, but for the life of me i cant think why they are so funny they have been running for so long? I mean, Natalie Portman must have done something to earn herself a crown in geek land comedy? Chuck Norris? umm? I suppose you would have to go back to the origin to find out why they are funny, but cant seem to dig that up? And why is the phrase "does it run linux funny" or hot grit?! Im lost, i suppose im so interested because im so amazed at the whole thing?! bizzare!
sdavies
I always thought trolling was named after a contraction of patrolling - trolling - which lends itself neatly to the image of a nasty lil fecker (like the fuqqer that was under the bridge in Billy Goats Gruff ) fishing for attention/feedback and just being mean - Troll. Never thought of traul - troll... I guess it could work You get messages after people post aggressive responses to such trolling messages as - "Don't feed the troll and maybe he'll move along". /. is pretty funny on times
rob wild
Weird was giving a lecture today an saw a students notes and in every corner had "1337" written down in different pen colours did think anything of it at the time!

Im lost, i suppose im so interested because im so amazed at the whole thing?! bizzare! Well, lets be honest here, a lot of the people who read slashdot and especially who contribute it are to put it bluntly anoraks (I include myself in this to some degree), and as such don't really know what a girl is (bear with me, this is the logic a few /.er's follow)...and as such is regard as p0rn and very bangable (Not really going to argue, as she is rather fit)... Slashdot is very linux biased, and as such anything that can be hacked to run linux is regarded as cool.... The rest of it is just very geeky really... sdavies
And .. oh Christ - if you weren't aware of the Chuck Norris phenomena... loool Seriously! Is it really only the geeks that get this I could have sworn everyone got the Chuck Norris bit The register or El Reg as it is affectionately known in some circles... love the tongue in cheek way it reports everything P.S. 1337 ... again... if you don't know what it means/is you never were meant to (Didn't you ever watch Hackers?)
