To buy a Harley is to admit that you really are too old and have more money than taste. Take a look at other (real life) Harley riders.... is that how you want to be seen? They're all accountants and dentists for God's sake. When I was buying my FireBlade my Mrs was not keen but didn't put up too much fuss. Besides, she wouldnt get on it even if she let me buy one, so I think its a non starter. I'm not a great fan of Harleys but just love the V Rod. A fazer or a hornet would do exactly the same job as that (albeit a bit quieter) but far cheaper and dare I say it with better handling. Harleys are a life statement. I've ridden one, for about four miles. It was the first bike I'd ridden for over ten years, a bit silly really. I seriously looked to buying it and a smaller car when I decided to sell my Aerotop, but I chickened out. No it didnt handle in the sense I was used to and it scared me a bit, but it felt good. Whilst we are on the subject of badges, I lust after an old Laverda Jota too, or an old Moto Guzzi Le-Mans. I'd be happy with a Van Veen wankel as well. Off the wall, slightly left of field stuff...the V Rod gets in here due to the styling only. I admit its a shame its a Harley, but I love the looks. I've ridden my uncle's Le Mans (He has a nice collection; Guzzi Le Mans 850, VFR1000R, Z1000R Bimota, etc) but was disappointed TBH. It had character for sure but was cumbersome in the twisties and slow on the straights. Awesome brakes though, for such a heavy machine. OTOH I could forgive a Jota anything, even the terrible electrical reliability and non existent headlights. I hear the brakes ain't up to much either. I'm not looking for a fight, I was just interested in why you thought they are 'a great bike' Like I said before, I'm not a rider, so I'm happy for people to dismiss my comments, I know the Harley's not meant to be the best in terms of handling or speed, but it's a cultural icon... It all depends on what Ewen's after, whether he wants something to rip around on, or for something to cruise on, after all, if Ewen's after the thrill of speed, isn't that what the Supra's for?... In the days when I swore I'd never buy a car, most of my friends were bikers and some lucky ones had the stuff of dreams (in those days). I test rode a Z900 Z1 the day after I passed my test, but couldnt afford it. It was nice, but there was something special about the Italian stuff. I lived in a B&B in the late seventies and there were often guys with big bikes staying over...thats when I saw my first Van Veen. Looked ace and sounded great too. You're only human I've got a real yearning for the old school Kawasaki 1000cc air cooled four with the square slab tank. Was it the Z1R? Or Z1000R? Something like that. They probably aren't that great by modern standards but damn they look so hard. I wouldn't even have to ride it, just to own one would be enough. (Does jism damage paintwork?) TBH, just buying a bike wont give it to me, but for a while tonight I was convinced it would. I'd need enough balls to forego the leathers and helmet and find miles of open, uncongested highland roads too. Not particularly fast, but rapid, confident and free. May as well have a bike I like the look / style of too, but out-right performance and handling not really needed. Too late though, I'd kill myself within weeks I'm sure, or get myself killed. The Supra and I understand each other, a new big bike would take a lot of getting used to after all these years, and I hate all the bloody armour plating I'd have to get stifled up in.
