Torrent help please...

Right, well i'm basically new to all this torrent stuff and downloaded Azureus this morning.

I've found a torrent and started to download it but i've noticed that it's showing my 'share ratio' as being bad.

Will this screw up the download or does it just make the whole process slower?

Don't want to really waste time and bandwidth downloading something that won't work.

This is what it looks like on the Azureus screen just now:

I wouldn't worry mate as you've got to start somewhere. When you start to get a collection of torrents that you have downloaded (and they upload) then your ratio will improve.

I'm pretty sure that's how it works. I'll have a look at mine tomorrow for you :)

once you've finished downloading your torrent you can leave it uploading for a while to improve your ratio. It goes on how much you've downloaded compared to how much you've uploaded. E.G. you download a 1gig movie & leave it going till you've uploaded 1gig then your ratio will be 1:1.... If you upload half a gig then your ratio will only be 0:5 .... Most of the time it doesn't matter but some torrent sites run a ratio scheme where you get banned for a low ratio.. It's supposed to keep the file sharing fair by maintaining a 1:1 ratio. Try to remember that you're downloading the file from other people, not a server somewhere :)

Your ratio always looks bad when downloading the actual file as you usually download a lot quicker than you can upload.

So usually the only time that improves a lot is by leaving it running for a while when you have finished the download.

As previously said by others, most sites are alright but some do want you to give as much back as you have taken.

The etiquette for this is to upload as much as you download, so if you have a 1 gig file, share 1 gig via uploading too.

right. well my computer is generally on all day so i'll just leave it on while it's being used.

as an aside, i've noticed it's now stuck at 72% and my download speed has dropped quite dramatically to under 4kb/s. obviously this isn't good but is there any way around it or is it just my isp pissing about or busier time of day?

I normal leave my uploads 5days mate once ive download them seems to help ya ratings try and get a 2.0 rating before i close it. i use http://www.torrent-damage.net which is a private site which is very very fast i get DL rates of 1100kb/s so if you want an invite let me know :)

My downloads quite often drop off for a few seconds but pick up again, i think its NTL that drops off when i max out my connection.

The best thing to do when looking for a file that you are after is to find one which has a lot of seeders, these are people who have the whole file and are distributing it.

You connect to them to get the file in pieces, people then connect to you (peers) to get pieces of the file as well and so on.

Sometimes seeders can be from different parts of the world and not everyone works on the same timezone so you might get a drop off at a certain time of day as seeders turn off their bittorrent software and go to sleep.

Well I've learnt something new today... I just download it and then remove the torrent when I revisit the PC... so that could account for the bloody slow download speeds I get..?!

Is the share ratio a cumulative figure then that helps your speeds? or just an etiquette thing I've completely missed

right.

what if the number of seeds drops while i'm downloading?

it seems to be going down a lot (i'm on like three seeds now) and the downloading is painfully slow.

if the number of seeds drops to 0 does it cut off and i have to start again or will it pick it up when seeds become available again?

I have had a little Dabble with this too. Had a slight snag when I could not open a file, think it was a RAR file, but I soon found a program to extract it. Have downloaded another file off there, but I can't seem to open or run it. It is a BIN file. Can anyone tell me how you open this etc?

The bin file is designed to be burnt to cd using nero.

You can open a bin file with "isobuster" then remove the video file from that and play it in your media player.

It's a CD image, you need to burn it to a CD using Nero or another CD burning program or use a tool like daemon tools which makes it appear as another drive letter like you burnt it to a CD and then put it in a CD drive.
