With the plastic enclosure removed it'll need matting for sure, but wouldn't mdf more flexible than ABS (i.e dampen the speaker response). Or am I talking crap again? Fantastic - that's all we need to kick this off for proper then! Homer - see my earlier post. ABS is both more flexible than MDF and solid too. Plus, you'll be able to use it again and again without worrying about the sides cracking alike MDF after multiple drill holes. You're right though. Would be good to get Matt Harwood or someone similars opinion.
stevie_b
Excellent work Sheefa! You've put loads of effort into this, and answering all our questions! Can we delay placing the order for a day or two until I can find out more about ABS from an acoustic point of view (from Matt Harwood or similar)? Chris and Alana
yeah I would also like to know which material would be best from an acoustic point of view. I would think it would be MDF as thats what all sub boxes are made from (although that might be due to MDF being cheaper) Anyway brilliant work Sheefa, not many would go out of there way to do something like this, WELL DONE and thanks. Sheefa
I've directed Matt Hrawood to the thread guys. Hopefully we'll have a solid answer. I won't put the group buy oder through until the end of Feb. That way, people would of been paid (normally 25th) and at least it gives people around 2 weeks to confirm their materials Thanks again for the comments guys. You're all very welcome. Sheefa
Right, apparently the ABS material is often used in cars anyway but the rings would have be made out of 'folex'? or something so they could be screwed easily. This is a plastic material, like street name signs, with a kind of high density foam in the middle. The only trouble is, Phil said there might be some sound resonance and so MR-MDF probably is the best bet guys! I don't want to upset anyone in any shape or form so the choice is yours, but I would probably go with the MR-MDF now. Costs I've received are per bracket and ring at £6.10 for the MR-MDF. Therefore, for two brackets and rings and shipping (he is shipping in batch to me first and I'll send out invidually) you're looking at £17 all in. These will be confirmed in full tomorrow afternoon and only then will this be moved to the final group buy section. ABS material is approx £8.20 each, so you're looking at about £21 all in there. Thank you for your patience guys. Got to get this right! Greg
stevie_b
Well mate, I think that's a bargain! (I'll stick with MR-MDF too.) PS how do you want to be paid?
Sheefa
Thanks Stevie. Don't worry about payment yet, but paypal would be best or direct bank transfer if you can. Will follow up once the final order has been placed after receipt of the sample and confirmation of prices. Cheers, Greg
Flip
Ohhh, well that has thrown the cat amoung the pidgeons hasn't it! So how long would Mr MDF last in there?, I don't regularly fully submerge the doors in water so what sort of time would they last in there? I guess you might be able to sort the resonance with a bit of dynamat or something?
Sheefa
Flip, they'd pretty much last forever mate so don't worry! They will be fully sealed anyway, and when you attached the rings spray a coat of laquer on top for extra assurance. I seriously doubt there'll be any problems with the material for the next 8-10 years so don't worry bud! Could still do the ABS, but I don't want the sound quality affected and we all know most companies use MDF anyway for its versatility, strength and excellent resonance qualities due to the random fibres. stevie_b
Sheefa, Just curious: is there any advantage to NOT getting the rings fitted and sealed? I would imagine that, whatever speakers each of us choose to fit onto the brackets, the ring needs to be attached to the bracket at the same place.
