What can I do about my broadband service?

Since mid-December my BB stable rate has been up and down like a whore's drawers.

Apparently it is because of BT's DSLmax system (the system that offer 'up to 8mb) being very trigger-happy when it comes to detecting line faults/noise/nothing at all and it reduces the stable rate down and down until it stop disconnecting. So, I've gone from a 2500kbps VERY stable rate to 500kbps almost within an hour. It then takes days of a steady connection to get the speed up and then it goes back down again.

I'm with Plusnet who tell me that it can be all sorts of things. Most likely is that the phone line is degrading and that they cannot do anything about it. BT aren't interested because a check of the voice side of things shows no problems.

From my research this problem is happening across numerous providers so I don't think changing to another will make any difference. I just don't accept that I should have to sit back and be happy that my line has 'suddenly' gone bad literally over-night and yet I can't get PN or BT to do a fucking thing about it.

I've raised tickets, I've done tests, I've bought a new filter, I've plugged into the master socket etc etc and I just seem to be going round in circles.

I even asked to be migrated back to my fixed 2mb service but they say my line is now so borderline that I may be no better off.

As an end user I shouldn't have to be aware of line quality, SNRs, attenuation and the like. I want a fast-ish, stable line with invisble interaction from the ISP. Is that too much to ask?

Suggestions?
