Fibreglass Bonnet

Has anyone got an aftermarket fibreglass bonnet? How much flex/bend etc should there be?

Obviously they're not as tough as the stock ones but I'm a bit worried about mine :( Going to see it on Friday evening and want to know what to expect.

Any guidance greatfully received..

A properly made fibreglass bonnet should be as stiff and dimensionally accurate as stock, with proper reinforcement on the underside and a virtually ripple free finish from the mould. With a kevlar mix added to the fibreglass extra strength and stability is added. Foam tube can be used to form cores for the reinforcement underneath with little weight penalty. The bonnet is only as good as the mould though, and how well the reinforcement is designed and applied. Most are utter rubbish though. Often the latch and hing mechanism structural mounts are dangerous.

This is what I'm worried about. Although I've not seen it yet (bonnet was delivered straight to the bodsyhop) I've spoken to them and they've expressed great concern and advised me not to use it. I'm more than a bit ****** off TBH. BUT They could well be over reacting, I'm justn ot sure what to look for etc

What make or who supplied.

Most I have seen have been absolute shite, that's is why I had louvres pressed in the stock bonnet on the purple car.

If I were to put one on a car it would have to have bonnet pins too.

Bet they aren't

Check the fit down the sides and between the headlights

Have a look at the underside at the cross membering

Check that the double skin is not coming away from each other

Check the catch fitting is well made and properly fixed / welded betwen the two skins of the bonnet

Fit bonnets pins

If TRD copy - check it has the water ingress panels under the holes (the best do)

If not - send the bugger back to whoever made it!

:(

Rosie,

My liner has a fibreglass bonnet on it and its fine. Ok, so it has bonnet pins but I have no other issues with it whatsoever. There is very little flex and at 140 leptons+ its still a-ok :D

No more than any other bonnet I've had - its fine. There is a little, but no more than I would expect from the stock alu bonnet, the same with impreza's. Providing of course its been made well, you shouldn't have any issues :D

Give em a :twak: and tell em to shut up moaning and fit it!!! LOL!

they have fitted it, what annoys me most is that i called up to make sure it got there and the apprentice answered and said "yeah its here we put it straight on, it's great- looks really good!"

then i speak to the head bloke and he's weeing his pants about it "you really can't use that, it's terrible, it'll let the whole car down, it'll need SO much work doing to it to make it even vaguely useable" etc etc.

what do i do if it is badly made though? im shafted basically. i really ******* hate this car it's been nothing but hassle since the day i got it.

The car hasn't been hassle, its that cack company - don't let them grind you down :)

Knowing how cack they've been I wouldn't listen to a word they say, its your car, you have to live with it so they should do what you want. :)

Best thing, IMHO, will be to go and have a look at it on the car, how it fits, how it feels, what its like on the bonnet stay etc. :)

If its crap then moan to the co you bought it from, get a refund and get them to pay the shipping back..........

You're welcome to have a look at mine at the next meet? (On that note do we have a July SEM planned?)

Rossie, love that bonnet, in fact you almost pursuaded (sp) me to get one, why cause I love forced induction things, and I love that opening for the filter in the corner, but with my forced induction headlamp, I reckon it might be over kill.........whats your opinions people.

Considering the delay yu've had with the car it does sound like it's the company trying to hold up things again, may be it needs a bit of work that they can't be asred to do.

It won't be till you see it for yourself that you can make a decision on the bonnet. Make sure you take a camera

although they've played a large part in the whole experience being about as much fun as a kick in the head, the whole thing has been a drain, from the day i started looking for supras!! i can't think of one thing that's gone right with it TBH.

Yeah I reckon you should get one. I know of one already in the country you can have pretty cheap.

Seriously if you get one on your car before me (if I keep it) I'll go spare.

It is. Kevins CF version is top quality.

I'd fit the bonnet pins on any aftermarket bonnet, personally even the stock bonnet doesn't look safe on the Supra.

Rosie, I think they are having you on, there will be nothing wrong with that. Plenty people have raved on about the a quality...

Gaz.

mines the fibreglass not the CF though, AFAIK cf is much tougher etc? I think I need to see what a 'good' one is like so i have something to compare it to.

Neil, if you happen to be passing Woking feel free to pop in :D In fact, join us for curry tonight :D
