tbourner
When going for it up sliproads etc. when I change gear the turbo's seem to stop spinning (hitting about 3500-4000 revs on the change) and then I get thrown forwards and it takes a split second for them to re-spool before getting the push again in the next gear. Is this normal? Having never had a turbo before I'm concerned about several aspects of the car. I don't have a boost gauge fitted (yet) so can't say what the boost is on the change, but it seems to almost go completely even though the revs never drop below about 3000. Barry
I dont think they stop spooling like it may feel like they are doing. Its probably the transition from 1 to both turbo's coming on line, I think a few people notice this and it varys from car to car. Maybe one of the VSV's is slow in opening?! Ian C
3500-4000rpm is the worst place to change up with the sequential system as it's mid-transition. You'll get varying results when you boot it again, it may be trying to use both turbos or half the boost goes to actuators slowing the spoolup noticeably. Change up at 3500 or earlier or give it large You've picked a complex beast as your first turbo car, fret not. Oh, and if you change gear fast enough you don't lose boost -Ian
tbourner
No I meant I change at about 6500-7000 but the revs drop to 3500-4000 in the next gear and it has the said effect (I'm no poncy half revs gear changer when it comes to sliproads!!!). I've tried fast gear changes but I'm still not used to the 6 spd yet, tis very 'heavy' and I miss 3rd sometimes when changing too quickly (high revs, bit of a crunch and embarrasing loss of acceleration!! Don't wanna be doing that too often!!). Anyway, s'long as you guys reckon it's not too serious, maybe a big single would help!
Jake
You should have got an auto Trev. No such problems with them Did you test drive both mate? Hang on a minute....how come my 4 speed manual can change gear and still be in second turbo territory but a 6speed manual can't? Just down to the time it takes to change gear in a manual? tbourner
Yeah test drove a couple of autos, still very nice I just prefered the manual for some reason, not sure why tbh. My dad said the box reminds him of the formula fords he used to drive!!
Jake
Well, Autos don't have the same street-cred do they? I test drove a manual and an auto back to back, then bought the auto. The manual box is good and strong but feels rather agricultural, if you know what I mean. Seemed like a lot of effort was required to keep it in the power. Too hectic for my middle-aged tastes. I cant believe how many people think the Man car will be far quicker etc . Jake of all people would be the type of guy who you would think would go Manual (hes a biker ,fireblade ) but he and i both find the auto is sooo suited to the TT lump . MONKEYmark
dont you also loose boost between shifts on a manual? or is that small you dont notice. also when you clutching to change gears on a manual then putting power back on loose grip and chirping the tyres. i would love a manual as it seems like you more of a driver going through the gears. they dont seem that much in it to me. the auto just seems to go and pulls hard. think most people tend to look down on autos as been an old mans car like a jag. why dont you try it in TTC mode then you will know what lag is. have a look here a guy has swopped his 6 speed out for a BL auto built box http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=188859 heres a 5meg clip of his auto shifting just seems to shift so fast. http://www.fuzionauto.com/suprauto.wmv
Ian C
The auto may well be brill for the Supra but having driven one after driving a manual for two years I hated it Put foot down, revs fly up then drift back down as the TC locks up then back up again, naah, it's like having a bowl of custard in the driveline. I don't care if it's faster in a straight line because it does all the work for you (you pikey power-braking bastards ) I love the gearbox. You can feel what's going on and where the stick is going. If you shift very fast you lose no boost. OK, I can't launch for shit and I'm first to admit it but it's still gotta be manual for me Trev, if you shift up and drop yourself back into the 3500-4000rpm range the same caveat applies - the sequential system will go all over the shop. However, shifting at 5500rpm should drop you back into 4000rpm, so you must be upshifting two gear at a time or something! Either that or you've swapped the final drive for the one off the space shuttle. -Ian
MONKEYmark
PHR do uprated internals for a 6 speed box now. they seem to handle the power in stock form. its harder to launch a 6 speed but can be done. i would love to try a manual but dont want to start over with tuning. its amazing to see a manual supra been driven well. that vid of nick k the f1 driver is great to watch. SimonB
Here here Ian, besides who wants to just go fast in a straight line? I'd much rather be able to select the correct gear for a corner and feather the throttle rather than guess what gear the thing is going to put me in. Watching the autos round Castle Combe at Japfest you could hear them changing down in the middle of a corner!

jagman
Monkey , Ive got 5 jags; 69 e-type fhc , two xjc (rare) two xjs v12(not so rare)- youre right they are considered an old man car,why i dont know, when you consider that the v12 can be revved to over 8500 rpm ( if you can produce energy for the ignition)-jags used to be the bank robbers vehicle of choice, then the cops used them, now its only drug dealers who can afford to run them
