Wez
Hey Guys, Was driving to work the other day and car started tripping out on me cutting in and out and then the it sounded like the starter motor stuck on, pulled over and smoke coming from starter motor area and car would not start. Everytime i tried to start it the power would reset and the alarm would go barmy I pulled the starter motor relay and then tried to start as a test and the alarm didn`t have a fit so I am assuming the starter motor is buggered and pulling to ground causing a short. How much does a new starter motor cost and how easy are they to fit? If anyone else has any other ideas on what could be causing this then please let me know, open to options at the moment as I am currently driving round in a renauly laguna. suprababy
Autolec reconditioned my starter motor only cost £32 - it was sticking and was also staying on - they said it was a mess inside but got it sorted in a day and is working perfect now. Halo-Inc
This might be of help to you if you find the contacts have gone, but it doesn't sound like the same problem I was having although it might be. Starter motor contact replacement For the sake of £20 it might be worth a go, if it saves you buying a new starter motor.
Wez
Thanks dude, I am going to take mine out this weekend and have a look, found this info on the US site which should be a helpful :- http://www.mkiv.com/manual/manualtt/starter_replacement/index.html
Halo-Inc
Yeh, saw that too, was great till I realised exactly where the two bolts that hold the starter are! Might be the manual is easier to get to, but the auto is a real tight squeeze to reach the upper bolt.
