dude
Ive now seen 3 front crank pulleys come apart in as many weeks (whilst driving, not removing) so my advice is give em a carefull check, make sure the outer ring (where the drive belt sits ) is not creeping forward , personally im gonna reccomend a new pulley to owners of older models who want a cam belt change . Terminator
John as we know many main dealers seem to apply heat to these with disastrous consequences. Is this a new problem just cause by wear and tear or is it possibly due to incorrect removal at a previous belt change. If possible a few pics of good and bad would hlep us to spot potential problems.
dude
Personally i think its now down to age/mileage and the constant heating/cooling down of the rubber joint in the pulley , one of the pulleys was on Matt 'the mole' Harwoods car and hes pretty sure a torch hasnt been near the pulley as far as he knows , thisa has long been a prob in the states but there again they do more mileage etc than us . Terminator
Cheers, I know it is a piece of string scenario but what sort of age/mileage are we talking about.
dude
All the cars are 93/4 !!!! Perhaps the rubber has a 10 year 1/2 life !!! Dude:flame Dev
Terminator
Ouch time to watch the 94/5's Part number would be useful. I was planning an early belt change this summer so a pully is now on the list, better safe than sorry.

Around £170 + vat i believe for stock or there are lighter aftermarket ones available (mine takes a stock belt) Dude:flame Dev

Matt Harwood
That mole's gonna bite you soon John! My pulley shifted forward. It completely separated itself from it's rubber centre. The last time the car has had a cambelt change was over 12,000 miles ago, and about 18 months. There were no signs of heat used previously, but that's not to say it hasn't happened before my ownership. Luckily for me, it didn't cause any damage. It simply shifted forward and the first thing I noticed was a squealy fanbelt. The belt had slipped off the pulley and was now happily cutting grooves into the rubber center part of the pulley, behind the pulley wheel! This has also happened to another Supra owner local to me twice! (He used a second hand pulley after the first one went... False economy maybe...) dude
If your going that far you may as well carry on and fit a new T. Belt at the same time Dude:flame Dev

loks
Yup, it's happened on my 94' J-Spec at approx 60k km (40k miles). My problem was that the tensioner wheel 'threw' itself forward approx 5mm taking the belt with it. Luckily I caught it in time, due to the excessive squealing , and it didn't break. I'm not sure that this was an age thing though, as I was at WOT at the time and a tad too long in the red area Lesson learnt.
morgaine
I'm starting to get nostalgic for my MkIIIT! I had a better understanding with that - bits usually broke that I could fix myself My pulley started squeaking a few days ago and I assumed she was just needing a belt. Now I am dreading daylight Oh well, might as well get the cambelt done at the same time, that's gotta be due now. And get new front calipers, as I think mine have died. Has anyone else noticed that everything seems to happen together? And usually after you've spent way too much money on alloys and stuff? Funny (or not as the case is really) that you should mention that as it was only 2 to 3 weeks after I'd bought my GS300 alloys that I noticed what had happened to my bottom pulley. Rob
My pulley sheared off as I entered a roundabout on a dual carriageway, causing the power steering to fail, and the steering to "stiffen" considerably. It was a lively few moments, and I coasted into work just as the coolant boiled over. This happened a week after a Toyota cambelt change, so it was deffo heat damage in my case. I cant believe Toyota put that pulley bolt back on , they are only cheap (£12 odd) , how much do they charge an hour ????
