DVD playing question.

When i watch a DVD, its never in full screen so to speak, there is always a big black band at the top and a black band on the bottom of the screen. It basically never fills the whole of the TV screen, top to bottom. What am i doing wrong, is there a better way to connect it, its a cheapo dvd connected to the scart socket.

Any ideas why the picture isnt the same size as when i watch normal Tv?

I think some films are meant to have the black strips, as I've got a 28" widescreen TV with 16:9 and 'Letterbox' modes... Sometimes the black bits disappear when I goto letterbox, and other times, there are smaller black bits, but nothing's out of shape...

There is nothing wrong with your DVD player or your set-up. The only way to get rid of the bars is to buy a TV set of the excat same ratio as the film you are watching.

Of course it'll be about four feet wide and one foot high but hell, you'll lose the bars.

...or you could just watch anamorphic transfers only.
