Car seems really tail happy :(

Recently my car seems really tail happy, i know the roads are not the best but im sure its not just that. Ill put my foot down in 3rd and if im not completly straight (sometimes even if i am) the back end steps out, its like there is no grip. Also if i go around a roundabout it seems to understear alot, if i give it some pedal then the arse steps out.

Im running on 18inch all around, 275rear + 235or245front...pirelli p9000s.

Any ideas?

Certainly does wake me up, kindof fun to be honest :D

I know its winter, just dont remember it being this bad last year or the year before.

I need to check the condition of the bushes, anyone know which ones i would be able to change myself and which ones need a press...?

Mine is very twitchy with this weather but it was worse when I had 275 rear with 235 front. I have gone back to 255 rear and its much better.

My 275 rears were Khumos though so maybe not the best comparison as my 255 rears are Eagle F1s.

Thank goodness its not only me! It seems certain roads (ie Lottbridge Drove, Eastbourne) use a different tarmac or something, which tends to get very greasy, cos I feel it slip so easily. A bit disconcerting I must say.

No turbo no 2 for the foreseeable future, too dodgy. Need some new rear tyres soon tho.

iv had this exact prob lately,

my car was usually fine around corners unless i put my foot down in 2nd and then it would easily step out, but 1 night it was just sliding all over the place even at speeds of 20mph on normal bends when not accelerating. seems to be ok now though so im hoping it was just abit of oil or something, as my car is NA so not as power/torque as the turbo lot

Mine's twicthy, but I expect it now and take it easy, and have a little fun!

The car has really grown on me since my accident and I'm far more confident in controlling her than I was, especially with RLTC in the Wet setting.

Then again, with it set to Wet, I pretty much slid 35 degrees coming out of a junction on station road. Scary, but the kids watching loved it - big thumbs up! :)

Has everyone checked tyre pressures lately?

That can make one hell of a difference, mines much better now that i have the right amount of air between me and the road.

It does still step out but definitely less often.

Ditto this, i sorted mine out at weekend, put 32psi in all round and made sure they where to 0.1psi. A bit anal i know but the car felt so much better afterwards when cornering and accelerating hard it ran much truer.

Here's the monitor i used to get the pressures just right it has a quick release thing that you use to let air out until you get to required amount.

I will now be checking my pressures weekly!:)

I think Sean's problem is more right foot related tho if its understeering your obviously pushing it to its limits and then the back end comes out when you give it too much throttle. Providing of course its in the dry, if the roads are greasy no wonder its doing it.

I am running 32 up front but I think I am running 40 on the rears as the last RR day I went to the operators pumped the rears to that psi.

I guess I should bleed off a bit. :)

Yeh i read on here 34 front 32 rear is a good combo for grip, on back wheels etc!

  • 2 weeks later...

I had my new rears (Goodyear F1 GSD3) fitted on saturday, and my my my that's made all the difference! Cornering, roundabouts, and just normal driving (Lottbridge Drove) feels 100% better. I don't think I'll be trying any stupid 2nd turbo business while its this wet tho.

They are both been inflated to 30psi. Fronts 32psi.

I think a change of tyres to another make may help. To be honest I think it's over tyred. I like 225 fronts and 255 rears myself, on 8 and 9 inch rims. They will make a vast difference in wet grip, with say Goodyear F1 rubber. I always think back to a long motorway journey in appallingly wet weather, in convoy with my friend who was in a 911 Turbo, and me in a 2CV. The Citroen was perfectly happy at 75 mph, no dramas at all.The 911 was aquaplaning on frsh tyres, at 65. Very wide rubber is NOT your friend in the wet or snow.
