Is free virus/security software worthwhile?

I have worked in the IT security industry for over 7 years and now run a corporate security reseller....... and have concerns over free security solutions.

1. they cannot possibly be as developed compared to paid for software as there are clearly receive little to no funds for R&D

2. equally they cannot be as quick to react with updates etc as multi-national organizations who follow viruses etc globally!

3. if you run a free bit of software and the machine runs ok then people sit back and say `what an excellent piece of free software, much better than McAfee, Norton etc`. A) how do you know its doing anything for a start! B) if it only picks up viruses based on signatures your probably already infected C) the new wave of virus and spyware combinations run hidden to the user and just exist to open backdoors on your machines for keyloggers and hackers to raid your personal details etc

I guess what I am trying to say is, even though you may be happy with your solution it may not be as robust or capable as your impression of it may be!
