Jake Posted January 27, 2007 Share Posted January 27, 2007 FreeLander, 1.8 'K-Series' engine, 99/00 model (W reg) Our FreeLander has lost power. It doesn't want to rev past 3000rpm and seems to have even less power than usual above 2500rpm. The engine had a new head gasket fitted about 10,000 miles ago. The car had a new rear silencer fitted last week. I took the plugs out just now and found that the one nearest the distributor was externally covered in fresh looking engine oil but all the plugs's electrodes look ok. I dunno where to start. When driving the car it feels like the exhaust is blocked, but that seems unlikely. I guess a compression test would be a good place to start - maybe a valve problem? Any suggestions? keron Posted January 27, 2007 Share Posted January 27, 2007 if the plug was covered with oil (externally then it may be the roacker cover gasket is no good? or the bolts need tightning? i know these have a common problem with head gaskets but you say it was done recently.... maybe the oil had covered the plug too much so it was running on one less? have you cleaned it up and tried it since? keron Posted January 27, 2007 Share Posted January 27, 2007 bit lost on that one then....prob best to get the compression done first then like you said? maybe woth checking the exhaust system out too. if its an old system then sometimes the insides of the silencers come loose and start to come out of system (you ever seen it before? looks like white loft insulation comming out of the back box!) i know this can cause the lack of power definately as it blocks the system up...? Jake Posted January 27, 2007 Author Share Posted January 27, 2007 Thanks for that I've cleaned up the distributor cap and rotor arm. Checked the cambelt hadn't jumped a tooth. Checked the air filter. NUTKIN Posted January 27, 2007 Share Posted January 27, 2007 The likely reason why the cat was broke is when the head gasket goes the engine sends unburnt petrol down the exhaust.
