Chris Wilson
Starter solenoid contacts burnt out, now a very common problem. I keep the repair parts in stock to do a while you wait repair service.
lightwave
I don't doubt CW is right, but out of interest, what alarm have you got?
richy2jz-gte
how much do you charge for the repair?
merckx
Starter solenoid contacts burnt out, now a very common problem. I keep the repair parts in stock to do a while you wait repair service Can't imagine it would be the solenoid contacts in this case, if you have to move the auto selector back and forwards between N and P then surely Richy would be correct in assuming it was the switch at fault. If it wasn't the switch, then why if you mess about with the position of the selector can you can get it started?
richy2jz-gte
its defo sumut to do with the selector most of the time it wont start in P but it will usually start in N
Chris Wilson
It may well be the inhibitor switch, but all Aisin Warner boxes use the same switch. So, you may well ask? Well, I do a lot with Volvos with this box, often with stellar mileages, and I, and a colleague who also works on Vovos a lot, have never known an inhibitor switch to go iffy. Yours may well, of course, be an exception! You could short out the inhibitor switch wires I suppose, as a test.
TLicense
I have an inhibitor switch kicking around. Yours if you collect. If not possible, I could find out the details of how to by-pass this for you. (As that's what I had to do for a while - different problem all-together though)
richy2jz-gte
would not go this mornin no matter how much i messed with the selecta just kept trying and it went with out moving the selecta so maybe it is the contacts. how much do you charge chris to renew the contacts? i would do um myself but the starter looks like a bit off a pig to get to. Chris Wilson
Given just the starter, 60 quid, given the whole car 90 quid. I have the bits in stock, a while you wait job, given notice.

Can you hear any clicking noises coming from the engine bay as you turn the key?

richy2jz-gte
no noises from engine other wise it would be the startermotor and not the solenoid:stupid:
mawby
I've got this problem again. I say again as I had it last year around this time but managed to live with it through winter and it sorted itself out then. But it's back. Is it common for it to only happen when the weather gets cold? Also, digging around the archives I found this detailing the part number needed to do the repair myself. Lazarus
Mine has just started doing this, it must be a combination of bad contactors and inclement weather, my old mkiiiT did the same. Does anyone know if the part numbers quoted in the other thread for a UKTT will be the same needed for the j-spec NA starter?. (TT starter 1.2kw, NA starter 1.4kw) Also has anyone got any advise on removing the starter from an NA?, I'm assuming it will be slightly easier than a TT due to more room around an NA engine for access. Halo-Inc
Hi Lazarus, I believe the numbers I quoted are fairly universal according to the Supra Microfiche, but I'd check with Toyota when you order them, as for the NA starter removal it can't be any worse than the TT you just need to make sure your not in a hurry to get the job done. Its pretty easy but rather fiddly.
