Ian W
I've recently installed a new 'office suite' i suppose you'd call it. OS X was originally set up to open text files with it's own 'text editor' but i'm wanting to change the default to this new software instead as this one can also open Word documents. Any ideas?? thanks ian
IDO
kick it?.. OSx text edit should open word ".doc"s anyway mate.. just only as rich text format.. not sur if you can change the default to be honest, i had the same problem with "image preview" and "photoshop".. end up just dragging and dropping file on to icon.. Any ideas?? thanks ian Hi Ian Select a txt file (any), click 'apple' key and 'i' (or go to 'File' in the menu at the top and press 'get info') You'll see an option to 'open with' select the application you want to use, if you want to change the defualt application, then press 'change all'. You can do the same thing to change default app for any file format. If you get stuck give me a shout. cheers

Pete
I'd been wondering how to do that myself. Still very new to this OS-X malarky.
Schtuv
Still very new to this OS-X malarky. Me too, but it's great using something that actually works, for once! Can wait for MacFuse to be mainstream, and AquaOffice to come out of beta

Can wait for MacFuse to be mainstream, and AquaOffice to come out of beta yeah, it's NeoOffice that i've been using for editing all these bloody job application forms. seems very good even if it is only a beta version. Ian W
Some suggestions Google Earth Acquisition (P2P) Azureus (torrent) i think Pete may have meant Mac specific software. these can be used with PC's as well can't they?

Nic
...and some more I find useful WeatherPop (weather and temp info displayed in tool bar at top of screan) http://www.glu.com Synergy (itune controls in tool bar and current tune display) http://synergy.wincent.com/ Sing that iTune widget (automatically finds song lyrics and downloads album cover artwork into itunes) BBC Radio Widget (widget to play BBC radio stations) iStat Pro (displays all system info)
Pete
I think I've got most of those so I'm not missing out on too much. (Except Solitaire - I hate that) Have you tried the latest Parallels? Bloomin thing stopped Coherency from working The beta program is free to join and get valid key codes for with that by the way. Sing that iTune sounds cool. Is there a way of automatically getting covers for music without registering with iTunes store? I don't want to buy any music from them, but it seems to even just register they want c/card details. Do they take a subscription or something or only charge you if you download music? I'll have to look at mine tonight as I found some other gems. Adium (for all your IM needs) up until now i've been using Mercury. have you used Mercury at all and if so how does Adium compare? Schtuv
what?? seriously? how does that work then? It uses the HDD shock sensors (and sensitivity is adjustable, to stop you breaking your system by hitting it too hard ...). I think it's great , but then again I'm a sucker for novelties ... That reminds me - essential Mac application #1; MacSabre!!! http://isnoop.net/blog/2006/05/26/macsaber-10-released/

Schtuv
cool as. what does this macsabre do then? Exactly what it says on the tin - turns your mac into a light sabre ... as you move your mac around (i.e. wave it in the air) it makes the classic Star-Wars wfshzoommmm-whsfoom noises. OK, maybe it's a bit naff, and I'm easily amused If you turn off the daft noises it does give you a nice readout of the forces on the shock sensors, though.
