dan4
when fitting the timing belt on a manual tt according to workshop manual it says "check tension between exhaust camshaft pulley and crankshaft pulley" exactly what tension should be there though?! supra matt
should be tight mate no real play when you press on it in the middle .#
dan4
im clearly being a wimp then as i have slack there with the timing marks lined up this is with the tensioner off still btw
supra matt
it will be slack without the tensioner on ! Thats the hole point to it it takes the slack out .
dan4
yes thats what i thought was obvious but it says check the tension before it says fit the tensioner lol. I have equal slack on the inlet cam pulley to crank pulley aswell which i would have said was normal until tensioner is fitted?
dan4
from the workshop manual.... cylinder) is at TDC on compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover. CAUTION: If reusing timing belt, ensure reference marks on timing belt and camshaft sprockets align and timing belt is installed in original direction of rotation. 10) Using sprocket holder, rotate camshaft sprockets so timing marks on camshaft sprockets align with timing marks on No. 4 timing belt cover. See Fig. 24. Install timing belt on camshaft sprockets. Ensure tension exists on timing belt between crankshaft sprocket and exhaust camshaft sprocket. 11) Using press, apply pressure on rod of timing belt tensioner until rod is retracted and holes in rod and housing are aligned. See Fig. 25.
supra matt
just means you should have no slack in the belt on that side mate any slack should be on the tensioner side .
dan4
k but the tensioner is in the exhaust side correct?
supra matt
yes your right my bad in that case you should have some slack that side, and no slack the other . give the crank a slight turn just to take the slack out the inlet side then release the tensioner and rotate the engine 2 full turns and recheck timming marks line up if they do happy days you can bolt it all back together , if not slacken and refit belt ,

dan4
sorted for future ref both sides are slack and when the tensioner is fitted it obviously tensions the exhaust side but also gently pulls the cam pulley back just enough to tension that side
