Changing rocker cover gasket...

I believe I need to change my rocker cover gasket on my TT. As theres a load of goop coming out of what appears to be the seal between the block and the rocker covers. Can anyone tell me how much it will cost in parts from toyota, and what is exactly involved in the job so I can do it myself? I dont think it looks too hard, but I think I just need to know how much torque i need on the bolts when putting the rocker cover back on...cheers!

It could be that the bolts/nuts can't remember which, are just loose, mine where, just try tweaking them up, some are a bit of a pain to get at, and if you take it off don't forget the two breather link pipes, these go hard and can be a real PITA to get back on, so if you do change the gasket get some new ones;) there is a Toyota main dealer that everyone on here uses, (just can't remember who):( as for torque its something like 6 ftlbs just a tweak really, just treat them like Nissan 6mm cheese bolts and you will be fine;)

All mine were only finger tight too, think this was the cause of my leak!

The intake side cam cover is a right bitch to get off. Theres a couple of bolts under a heater pipe at the back of it which are a pain to get too.

Parts are about £8 each gasket from Mr T.

edit: Oh, and the hose from PCV valve to inlet manifold is hard to get off if its gone brittle.

thats what i had haydn. if you remove the idle contol air hose you can get to the two bolts at back of cam covers and tighten them as mine were finger tight. Seems to be common prob with jap cars, seen it on my previous gt four, current celica and a handful of skylines

just to add, if you are changing the gaskets you will find 4 studs (2 on each cam cover) front and back, the cam cover won't lift over them so you will have to remove them.

just fit 2 old nuts on the top of the stud and using 2 spanners lock them together, you should be able to wind them out using the top nut.

hope that makes sense? (it did to me :D)

I've never don't it like that Jon. The covers will lift over those studs - you're just not trying hard enough. :D

Luckily im in the process of a timing belt change, so there was enough room at the front of the engine bay for me to stange in it, and lessen the strain on my back! ;)

Definatly found it worth the effort to remove the heater pipe in question!
