martynb
My logbook describes my J-spec as a 3 litre TT etc, but in an effort to correctly identify it I have looked around the site to try to identify which model it is. I HAVE tried the search but it doesn't bring up threads which I know exist which rather diminishes my reliance on finding new ones. The chassis plate ends in ALPVZ which from the info I can find on here means it is a VVTI but I have no other info to corroborate this and it was sold to me as a facelift model - are there other ways to identify exactly which version I am driving ? Thanks
geoffvalenti
Hi Martyn From the NZ supra site http://www.mkiv.co.nz/ your car decodes as an RZ-S automatic car. You can only tell if its a VVT-i by looking at the engine, but if its after September '97 it will be. So if its a VVT-i is it tiptronic as well? What year is it Sounds nice HTH
SimonB
You can't tell if it's a facelift from the model number as they are the same as pre-facelift cars. If it's a VVTI then the valve cover is a different colour and has a bulge at the front. The facelift came in before the VVTI though, so you can have non VVTI facelift cars like mine. There are a number of differences between the facelift and non-facelift cars, the front lights being the most obvious. The facelift ones have a dark interior and have the sidelights separate with the indicators. Earlier ones are silver and have the sidelights build into the main light cluster. merckx
I've got a VVTI TT. If you open the bonnet which you must have done by now you will see the top cover on the engine has in big letters - VVTI Geoff pointed you to this site http://www.mkiv.co.nz/ If you look under Specs it will tell you everything about the VIN Plate. Here's a pic :
Lewis
On a side-note - Were any VVTI aerotops made? I am sure that if they were then "rocking horse shit" wouldn't even cover it as I know that TT aero's are rare enough. Just wondered?!? geoffvalenti
TT aerotops were discontinued in 1995, so no TT VVT-i s NA aerotops went on until 1998 and the later NAs were VVT-i so the answer is no TT's but yes, VVT-i NA aerotops were produced, I'm pretty sure that Faye has got one. Lewis
I wonder how an N/A VVTi would compare to a standard TT then? Sorry - didnt mean to send the thread on a tangent.

Lewis
Sorry no, I wasn't meaning that the NA would compete against the TT, I meant compared to non-VVTi NA engines. I am told the difference in the VVti TT is 25bhp (circa) so would be intersting to see what points (if any) the NA VVTi loses compared to the standard NA. Up to a certain speed the NA and TT are pretty much comparable, I was wondering if the VVTi would keep up in the same way and if there was a different point at which a noticable difference would be seen. martynb
To avoid quoting you all and making this post 3 yards (metres) long thanks very much to you all guys. I hadn't realised the NZ site had so much tech info on there. So it is a '97 J-Spec RZS TT Auto Facelift . I've had it for just over a year and it puts a bigger smile on my face than anything I've owned. I fell in love with the mkiv the first time I ever saw a pic of one but a succession of Co cars stopped me from having one when they were "current" in the UK. It is my daily driver and has never missed a beat or let me down in any way - no-one has ever owned me either! Apart form being lowered and having some skirts it is pretty much unmolested from stock. It has got to go soon but I can't bring myself to do it
