RedM
The big fan at the front of the engine bay made a weird noise this morning like it wasn't really wanting to have to do anything. By the time I'd jumped out and opened the bonnet it was spinning freely but making the occasional odd noise (imagine a cross between water being squirted, ice cracking and electricity shorting:blink:). As the car warmed up it seemed to settle down and when I dropped the other half off at work it was it's usual self. What's all that about then? Jake
I guess the viscous coupling has started to seize. Can you freely spin the fan by hand when the engine is off and cold?

I'll check in an hour or so if it spins freely. What's the upshot of a seized fan? End of the world?

RedM
How much are they?
Jake
What's the upshot of a seized fan? Not much. The engine will idle more roughly as it's driving the fan all the time. It'll make more air noise too. Nothing major. They're usually about £50-£60 for used or IIRC about £240 new.

Thanks Jake. So, it spins at the same rate as the engine is revving when broken but doesn't when working correctly?
