Gough
Evening all Went too Sextons in Southampton today to have a chat about the possibility of fitting a tracker. I think he recommended the tracker horizon (can't remember for sure though). My question is, are such trackers always active, or do they just trigger (i.e send a message to the tracking company) when the car's alarm is set off? Do you have to report the cars stolen before the tracker is used to track? Finally would I be correct in presuming that if the car gets stolen or hi jacked, it is just a case of ringing up the tracking co and the car's tracker will be activated? Sorry if these questions sound a bit obvious, but I didn't get round to asking the chap at sextons because he was in a bit of a rush. Many thanks, Joe

merckx
I've just ordered a GSM Alarm Monitoring System + GPS Vehicle Locating System. You put a sim card in the unit , it is programmed to ring any telephone number that you specify when someone sets the alarm off. You can also track the vehicle. Gough
Thanks for the replys Steve M and merckx. That GSM alarm system looks rather handy! I did a search on trackers but didn't find any answers to my specific questions. Can anyone else shed any light? Matt Harwood if your around could you help? Any further help greatly appreciated. Matt Harwood
The Tracker Horizon uses GPS and LW transmissions if the vehicle should be stolen. This is what makes it better than simple GPS. They're only triggered if either the car moves without disarming the immobiliser, the immobiliser wiring is tampered with, or power is removed from the system. In any of the above instances, Tracker will contact you, to find out if there is a genuine reason why the vehicle is moving, (for example, it may have simply broken down, and been put on a recovery truck). Assuming the vehicle shouldn't be moving, they'll activate the Tracker. With Tracker, its actually the Police that do the tracking, as well as being monitored by Tracker. IMO, there are more technological systems on the market, but none as efficient as Tracker. HTH BTW, we also deal with RAC Trackstar, so I'm not just saying that because I sell it! Gough
Many thanks for the info Matt So if the car was hijacked while the engine was running (and the alarm/immob was diasabled), could the tracker still be activated if I call them? I'll probably be going for the tracker horizon, (unless there's a better system for the money). I think it was priced somewhere between the £400/£500 mark.
