merckx
My sister's just bought a new router, D-Link DI-624M. I can get a couple of PC's working which are connected by cable to the router. But I cannot get the Wireless LAN for the laptop functioning at all, there's a small "WLAN" led on the front of the router which isn't illuminating, it should flash during data transmition. When I search for available networks on the router there isn't one from the new router, just those from the neighbours. Here's a pic of the settings on the router: Any help please? JustGav
Your key area is blank, have you put a key in it yet? Change the SSID as well. Gav

I thought any SSID would do, when searching for available networks on the laptop I would just have to choose the the correct one? edit, the key appears if WEP is enabled. Is this necessary? Guru
The SSID is the 'name' of the network that you have. If you leave it as broadcasted people will be able to see it and try and connect. The key Gav is on about above is just that a key to the network. Currently you have it switched off (see the WEP Encryption option). If you want to be ultra secure then you should change the SSID name to something different, don't broadcast it and then switch WEP encryption on. Once the WEP encryption is on you will have to set up the connection on your laptop to use on of the keys in that list. Not sure how you make keys on the D-Link but you usually have an area to put in a personal few words and then it uses that sentence to generate encypted keys. Oh and I would change the channel too HTH
merckx
I was just looking at the fault finding section. It say's WEP should be disabled, I can enable this later when I get an internet connection. Also, the SSID I can change when I get an internet connection. The router just doesn't appear to be broadcasting any wireless signal!

geoffvalenti
Try a reset on the router. There should be a hole in the back where you can stick a paperclip. This "should" reset the router, although I have had problems in the past with D-Link routers refusing to reset until the reset operation has been performed a number of times. If not you can perform a "hard reset" the procedure will be in the manual, but you should download a firmware update from the manufacturers site, because D-link routers sometimes ask for it after a hard reset

I might try the "hard" reset , don't know what else to do . I cannot understand why I can connect to the internet via cable and not through wireless, there aren't exactly many settings I could've got wrong. I've tried all the possible ways it could be configured. What a pain in the arse these things can be, not exactly user friendly ! Thanks
geoffvalenti
D-link routers can be a right PITA To be honest. Although this does sound like it may have a fault if it doesn't work after a hard reset.

Although this does sound like it may have a fault if it doesn't work after a hard reset. It doesn't work, it says to hold the reset button in for 10 seconds which I've done. Just no Wireless LAN led on the front which is a fairly basic fault, it should appear without any messing with the settings really.
geoffvalenti
Have you tried disconnecting the power lead, then holding the button in, and then connecting the power and holding the button for 10 seconds. Make sure you've got a firmware upgrade on your PC, because it sometimes asks for it and you could end up with it completely dead If it still doesn't work then its probably faulty and you'll need to take it back to where you got it. Konrad
Change channel, make sure, that your network is allowing all at start, show us advanced options and all other settings. Change SSID to something else, do not encrypt data, do not enable any keys. Also make sure, that your DHCP server is working and that your laptop have firewall switched off, when you try to connect to router. WLAN led will not blink if there is no computer connected to router. Edit: Downloading manual to this router, will take a look and think about it

Oh and I would change the channel too HTH I'd just like to point out that SSID broadcasting (or changing its name) has no bearing on security AT ALL! don't worry about it, seriously. If someone wants to know your SSID they will just packet sniff off the wireless, since SSID is sent in plain in every wireless packed anyway there is literally no point trying to hide it lol I think you are trying this already, but try and get it going without any wep/wpa etc first, you can add security later. change the channel only if you are clashing with your neighbours, again otherwise there is no point. I take it that if it came with an external aerial, that you plugged it in? Maybe that model doesn't, I'm not familiar with it. When you get it working, you'd be better off using wpa if you can. good luck with it, normally wireless is a piece of cake to get working, maybe you have a duff unit? geoffvalenti
Wlan light on this router should flash regularly whether device is connected or not
Ric
try changing the channel. like 12-14 or somthing, the lower end of them can recive interferance + if your neighbours have wireless etc with the same channel it fudges things up
chilli
the light should come on regardless of the channel you are on / interference there is probably another setting somewhere that enables/disables the wireless side of things
