Jezz
I signed up with sky broadband today cos NTL customer service is shocking, to the extent that i'd only ring them if i wanted to know how the weather was in India. Anyone else using sky broadband? £10 a month for the dogs nuts package, free wireless router, and my line will be running 14meg.

Im using the £5 a month upto 8mb option and to be honest you get what you pay for. Although just about every ISP I have been with has employed idiots for customer support reps. At the minute it is ok for £5 a month but not a brilliant service by any means. Good luck, especially if you have issues at the start. Jake
my line will be running 14meg. Will it? How do you know? Do they do a test of some sort? If NTL don't get my cabel broadband working tomorrow I might go with Sky myself. I'm just a bit worried that the advertised speeds might be total BS and I find myself stuck with a fresh 1 year contract and still only 1meg

MrHanky
What's not brilliant? Do you get anywhere near the 8mb download? I get no where near 8MB. I am getting upto 3.8mb at best most of the time. I know I am not really close to the exchange but I was getting 6.5mb constantly with my previous ISP (before they were bought out and turned to crap). So I know that I should be able to get faster speeds. Plus I occasionally get cut off and get an error code, but then 10 mins later it is ok. The speed depends on line quality and distance to exchange. My line is capable of 16meg, but will be running at just shy of 14meg. We'll see. Our exchange is 300 yards away! Jake
Remind me how you do the test to find out how far from the exchange you are? I know you dial 17070 but I can't remember which options you choose from there. Anyone know?

Hmmm, 2.62km from the exchange That's quite far I guess. Maybe I'll stick with cable after all.

ivan
I must admit that apart from the Bombay call centre, I've not had too much problem with NTL. Paying for 4Mb, getting 4Mb thanks. Must remember to ask them "what's the weather like over there" next time I have to call them though.

I'm about 2.5km from my exchange and have the Sky 16Mb package (tenner a month). I get about 3Mb D/L. It's not great, but can't really complain for the price. Konrad
It is not only distance to exchange - it is also how many users are online and using service at same time. If someone wants to sell me 16 Mbits connection for fiver - I call him liar. There is always some small print somewhere "up to 14 Mbits". You will probably never see 14 Mbits anyway. I have 2 Mbits connection from blueyonder, never called their customer support so I have no idea about weather in Bombay, what I know tho is that I have this connection from 2 years, never had ANY issue with it, receving pure 2 Mbits (which is enough for 4 computers in my LAN) and i do not need any modem or login/password crap on router/my computer, because this connection is on 24h/7 (modem is logging in by itself). VELOCITY
Yeah I've got the top package with sky and its great, my line can handle 17.2 megs apparently. Customer service is great to and Uk based which always helps. On downloads I have only got up to 6 megs though
Jezz
Thought i'd update on this. Got my free sky/netgear wireless router last week, and my line went live yesterday. So today i went and bought a couple of usb wireless adapters and installed it all. Wow!!! I thought my NTL was quick. This is just lightening. My current connection speed is reading 15.3meg. Cant really fault that for less than a tenner a month.
