Ewen
My daughter and her boyfriend are about to buy a Husky / German Shepherd cross. She says shes checked out the breeder and documents etc but we dont know much about this breed. If anyone cares to post an opinion on this breed (temperament / behaviour etc) I'd appreciate it. garethr
Firstly, it's not a breed, it's a cross. If it was a pedigree, I'd say talk to the rescue/welfare organizations for the breed. Unlike breeders, they don't have a vested interest in feeding you bullshit. Since it's a cross.... who knows? If the GSD is a good one, and the pup inherits the GSD's good points, then it will be trainable and a good guard. On the other hand, if it inherits the Husky's characteristics, it might be difficult to train, inclined to run off, a lousy guard, and death to small animals. Personally, I think dogs like Huskies are interesting, but far too much of a liability as family pets unless you really know what you're doing. http://www.siberianhuskyclub.com/abouthuskies

Ewen
Out of those three it would be a springer every time. Westies...granddad had two, just adorable and my wifes choice. Springers...where I was brought up (Holy Island) every one had one, including dad. Puppies were given away to neighbours. I grew up with these dogs and have loved them since and they would be my choice. Beagles...late contender, looking into it a bit more as both wife and I like them. paul mac
i have a GSD now and the dog before (god bless him) was a GSD, they are fantastically loyal dogs and would follow you to the end of the world until there legs fell off, they are fierce guard dogs and dont just bark they WILL attack, like any big dog if you aint prepared to put in the walkies then buy a cat, you have to treat them with an iron rod i have had a couple of old dears have a go at me over the years for knocking s**t out of the dog for bad behavior but unfortunately that is the pack language they understand, i have 2 young children and the dog does not come in the main house with them (he lives in the utility room) as much as i love my dog i love my kids more, is your daughter an experienced dog owner because when the dog goes through its "teenage" phase you WILL have to stand toe to toe with it at some stage when you are disciplining it, if you back down or show fear you will have BIG problems. I would not touch a fashion accessory cross breed like this with a barge pole, at least with a pure breed you roughly know what to expect, but this thing (it looks cute now) could be a loaded gun. Trouble is its ultimately down to her and her bloke...As a dad, I can only research / get advice and pass it on. The bloke has had GSDs before and treated them well, Roxy loves dogs too so we are half way there.

My parents have had 2 GSD's now and both are/were incredibly loyal. Their current dog annoys the hell out of my mum cos it's so loyal it will sometimes literally follow her everywhere. She can move from one side of a room to the other, and he follows! They went through a bit of hell to discipline him though as he suffered some serious teenage angst moments. I think he's great, but I don't have to put up with him 24/7! As other people say, a cross breed is an unknown quantity. As for the other dogs being mentioned, I'd go for the Springer personally. An ex had 2 of them and they were so mild-mannered

lambertpig
we have a 15 month old gsd x siberian huskey and he has the most beutifull temp ive ever seen in a dog. i am not being biased as at our local park fellow dog owners comment that he is the most sociable dog . he has never growled snapped or snarled at any other dog.they are a very playfull fun breed about the breed .cross huskey gsd crosses are usually very succesfull but as always they must be from good parents hard work? well i have just come in from his second outing today .walking/running for about 50 minutes off the lead so he is content. however working breeds like this need lots of exersize so if you cant spare 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day walking then please dont do it. the dog will become restless and frantic and noisey/destructive. in the early months expect some property damage so be vigilant to minimize this kodi now knows what he cant touch and we leave him the run of downstairs when we are out huskies are known for roaming off but kodi is pretty good he is always off the lead on local dog areas and will only refuse to return to my side if he feels he has not got a good value walk a big issue to cope with is the hair .kodi leaves white hairs everywhere. and when moulting its like bundles of cotton wool at least they keep themselves spotlessly clean as someone posted earlier the dog needs to know who is "pack leader" and that must be you! having owned gsd before they will know this good luck and enjoy
Rob
Don't get a GSD, they're bollocks and they need re-gassing after two years.

I'll make sure she reads all this. I'll have to think of a clever answer for when she asks why they need re-gassing though.
