Hi everyone

Was hoping someone could help, i'm thinking about buying a Supra, but i'm only 20, so i'm not sure whether its a good idea...

Well i no its a good idea, but financially.

I'd have about 7 grand to spend on the car, and may borrow a little extra if i have to, but as its a group 20, is the insurance premium going to be like i'm 17 again? I'll have 3 years no claims in a couple of months, and I no its still not gonna be cheap, but is it at the point where it really isn't worth it.

Any suggestions on good insurance companys, or just general advice on buying a supra?

Cheers for any help :)

Insurance will probably be £1500+, in fact probably nearer £2k.

You'd get a nice NA for that money but you'd not get much if any change going for a TT. Insurance wise there's no real difference.

You might have enough for the car and insurance but you also have to decide if you can really afford to maintain and fuel it.

expensive yes, but well worth it, if you love cars

what you driving now

A '97 1.8 Escort, had it for nearly 2 years now, and its just about reached the end of its life, 148000 miles, so its done me well, but i never bothered getting anything newer, or doing to much work to it cos i've been saving for something really nice, hopefully a supra.

I had a feeling it was gonna be something like that.

How much should i be looking at spending for an excellent condition TT? And what model would you recommend? i was thinking of trying to find a UK model with a low mileage

For a good condition auto tt you're looking at 10-12k for a good condition manual tt you're looking at 12-15k single turbo conversion jobs could be anywhere between 14 and 20k.

Low milage UK model will be extremely rare to come by.

Just for info I pay just over £900 for my fully comp insurance with all mods declared using elephant. I'm 25 with 5 years NCB and no points.

I no insurance is gonna be a lot, but theres no way round that, so i'm not really bothered by it, but i'm not gonna buy a badly looked after one, so i reckon a bit more saving.

Would you say a UK model over a Japan import?

I've read the differences chart on the homepage, but are there any differences that should really affect the decision? From just a quick read i think i'd go for a UK model for the steel turbos, advice?

Thanks :)

You're much more likely to find a low mileage jap car than a UK and you could also go for a fresh import.

Jurgen on here seems to be good at finding nice cars at the right price may be worth a pm.

Make sure you also have some money for maintenance and repair although extremely reliable these cars can be very expensive to run and maintain.

Thanks for the advice, I think a bit more saving is needed, might even give it another year for an extra year ncb.

I don't spend my money on much else but my car and saving, so i'm happy to pour a load of cash into a supra.

Anyways, ta for the help

Sell the escort, buy a car with little to no depreciation, max 5 years old, run it for a year and save like crazy then come back after that :)

That is essentially what i did. Ran a Polo Diesel for 2 years while my mates had larger more powerful cars, but insurance and fuel came out at so little i could put loads of cash aside.

If you really fancy a RWD car i honestly don't think you should go for a supra TT first time. Even an N/A would be a bit of a handful as they are a totally different driving experience from anything you would have driven before.

I currently have a MR2 Turbo which standard produces 220bhp and its a handful with only minor mods (mine is around 260-280) and i've kerbed it badly once. I've had it for a year and a half or so now so i'm looking to go for a supra. These cars always command MUCH respect, just look through some of the threads with experienced drivers crashing them.

TBH if i were in your shoes i would be looking at a RWD car with a little less power, even if just for a little while till you get used to it. I would recommend a Nasp MR2, if you got the 170bhp one it would be MORE than enough to get you started on your RWD path as they are still a handful. You could go for a MX5 but the handling on them won't prepare you for a supra as the MX5 is on rails. An MR2 will bite your head off if you mistreat it, its quite a bit more twitchy than the supra so if you can get used to it and respect it the supra should be fine.

Of course its up to you but paying for insurance isn't the only thing, claming it is not to mention your safety.

I was told this too, as I was driving a small front wheel drive car and really wanted a Supra. After ummm-ing and ahhh-ing for a while I reached the point you're at - just go for it, or buy something with less power but with RWD to gain some experience (MR2, 200sx....).

Call me crazy, but I just went for the car I've wanted for years. As it's the car of my dreams I have found that I drive it a lot slower than I ever did my other cars. And it's a good job too - as everyone says, they can catch you out. Getting the back end out at 50-60 (unintentionally) in second gear when the second turbo cuts in isn't unheard of, and it's happened to me on one occasion.

Thinking about it, a less powerful car would probably have been a good idea, but at the end of the day, I'm a very happy bunny and love any excuse to go for a drive! And the advise of "just get a TT, but respect it" helped me on the N/A vs TT debate :D

Thanks for all the help guys.

I think i might give it another year, get the extra NCB, get some more cash together, look at something else slightly less powerful in the meantime, and not slide a new £10k supra into a tree.

I haven't really looked at MR2s, wouldn't rule them out, but always kinda liked Nissans, how much would i be looking at for a stock 200sx?

And any other suggestions for nice cars to be a step up between an escort and a supra?

I bought my supe June last year i'm 24 3yrs NCD and a years insurance with Bell was £1k :) might not be a good idea to go TT straight away I drove rear wheel drives before the supra but it's a different beast especially in the wet (Went for a bit of a slide as I came out of a roundabout at 25mph, went up the kerb done a 180 and ended up at the top of an embankment.. Luckily no dammage though  ) Anyways there's my 2p

I started off with an N/A many a moon ago and I got used to the power and how it drove in the 3yrs I had it. It set me in good stead for the TT I now have. saying that, the kick of the 2nd turbo is awesome the first few times you experience it and could easily catch the driver out if abused.

Good luck with the saving and start off with an N/A is my advice. you will find it packs a nice punch after your Escort 1.8 ;)
