Whitesupraboy2
does this sound any good to anyone. I think it could work well. Espically as you can just by the dry ice container itself and fitting it too most cars http://www.01designsystem.com/diis_home.html
Wez
I wonder if you could make one that was approx the same size as an intercooler to place where a FMIC would normally go? Interesting
Alex
If your really into your drag racing then it might make more sense than taking out a headlight... Would have thought the IC spray systems though would be better.
Wez
Spray it with NOS or water?
Whitesupraboy2
was just reading the Spec and it says that it is about a 40 - 50 degree drop in temperature. A intercooler spray surely dont drop that much??Having this after or maybe before the intercooler on the pipework would surely make a big difference to the temperature of the air going in, allowing more air due to density that be like starting the car on a cold morning and having that perkyness it has
Alex
40-50 degree drop for stationary air...doubt fast moving air would get cooled that much. The piping is too small, 2.5" - stock Supra is 3"+. The IC spray I was thinking of would be CO2 (a fire extinguisher) it would cool very nicely lol
Whitesupraboy2
good point about the size, i wonder if it would fit a 3 inch pipe. do you reckon a big gain would be noticed on a NA. I mean for the box alone at moment is only bout 150 quid due to exhange rate,if you then get right pipe made up and put induction kit on it. surely a nice increae would be noticed for cheap bucks as well

The velocity of the air would just be faster. I don't know what effect that would have, but the fact that it is also being cooled down after would reduce the velocity again. It doesnt take much to chill/heat air. A hair dryer heats it pretty well from a hot bit of wire. An air con unit (frrestanding) only has a short run of pipe that the air passes over to cool it down enough to make your office more pleasant. Should certainly be more responsive and eager. Like on a really cold morning:)

Wez
Hmm, my intake pipe with my induction kit is 4" so I would need a very big box. How long would it last, how often would you have to stock up on dry ice and how easy is it to get hold of.
Whitesupraboy2
I asked some questions and heres the replys..... 1. Is Dry ice easy to get hold of? DRY ICE CAN BE PURCHASED AT YOUR LOCAL SUPERMARKET - IT IS VERY EASY AND INEXPENSIVE TO PURCHASE. 2. How long would it last? WE HAVE TESTED THE DIIS IN HOT RACE TRACK CONDITIONS IN THE SUMMER TIME, THE ICE IS SEALED IN AN INSULATED CONTAINMENT UNIT - ONE FULL LOAD WILL LAST ABOUT 1.5 - 2.0 HOURS - WE ARE ALSO DEVELOPING A CARBON FIBER INSULATED COOLER WHICH MOUNTS IN THE TRUNK OF YOUR VEHICLE TO STORE AN ADDITIONAL 10 POUNDS OF DRY ICE FOR UP TO 5 DAYS IN THE SUMMER TIME. 3. Any complications using this on a Turbo machine (i presume not) ABSOLUTELY NOT - THIS SYSTEM DOES NOT AFFECT THE PRESSURIZED AIR IN ANY WAY BESIDES MAKING IT COOLER. THE INTAKE PIPE IS SEALED FROM THE DRY ICE, SO THERE ARE NO BOOST LEAKS OR PRESSURE LOSSES AT ALL - ONLY COLDER DENSER INTAKE CHARGE. THIS SYSTEM WILL WORK ON ANY TYPE OF ENGINE - PERIOD. 4. Any kit being made for toyota supra NA and TT mk4? YES, WE WILL DEFINETLY BE DEVELOPING A SYSTEM FOR THE TT MK4 - MORE THAN LIKELY WITH CARBON FIBER TUBING TO KEEP THE WEIGHT DOWN, AND WE WILL ALSO BE MANUFACTURING THE DRY ICE CONTAINMENT BOX IN INSULATED CARBON FIBER AS WELL. THE ENTIRE WEIGHT OF THE SYSTEM WILL BE AROUND 2 LBS. OR LESS. THE UNIT CAN ALSO BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ANY EXISTING INTAKE SYSTEM, BY ADAPTING IT INTO THE INTERCOOLER OR INTAKE PIPING. THE UNIT IS AVAILABLE ALONE FOR $275.00 WITHOUT PIPING. 5. Would you be able to ship to the UK and any discoutn for a bulk order? DEFINETLY A DISCOUNT FOR GROUP ORDERS - UP TO A 30% DISCOUNT DEPENDING ON QUANTITY. AND SHIPPING TO THE UK IS NO PROBLEM AT ALL - WE CHARGE A FLAT RATE OF $60.00 FOR SHIPPING TO THE UK. anyone with more questions please just ask me and i will get in contact with the person now dealing with me. they are very quick at answering and give good answers. ( i got a salesperson who knows what they talking bout!!!! )
Alex
Doesn't the pipe material want to be the best heat conducter available? ie not Carbon but say Copper?
Whitesupraboy2
i dont know good question but isnt copper heavy and if carbon is made very thin coz at of day inside the box it doesnt need the strength but just the shape. the coldness will be able to get through. i have enquired about 3" and 4" systems and 3" is in development as we speak. she said 4" is a possibility. At end of day if you want copper you can just buy the box and put your own piping through it. Im slowly edging towards going for this. though the salesperson gonna be working for her money Alex can u think of any more important questions i can ask?? No more questions ATM i can answer this one for you guys who are TT there will always be a gain as the air will always be cooled no matter what meaning more dense air allowing you to get more air mass in. the engine bay is always much hotter then outside the car, so there will always be big gains in temperature loss. whether it 35 degres on 10 degrees outside under the bonnet will only vary by a smaller amount I was wondering about the dry ice part myself?!? Alex
My - why bother in the UK was aimed at the NA not TT runners....as that's what you are Get it if you want it.
jagman
I can see a couple of problems 1- when the car is not running and the box is full of dry ice,any moisture in the air in the intake will condense and form a film of ice inside the pipe ready to be ingested . 2 the volume/mass of intake air at ambient temp compared to the volume/ mass of air box at freezing is so large with a contact time of fractions of a second heat transfer will be too small to have any effect. like putting a hot needle in a bucket of cold water. I think fmic water spray will work heaps better
Guest Rays the roof
Anybody got one of these?? I have contact for dry ice in the midlands and am thinking of making one for my NA as a ickle project....
