another fcd problem

hey guys just fitted my 2nd thor fcd in a week and its doing the same as the 1st one, idling way below 1000 and wanting to cut out all the time and a bit spluttery at low revs. thor said they had a couple of faulty ones in the last batch surely ive not had 2 of them. theyve been fitted by an auto sparky so their done right anyone else had this problem twice. i know he didnt disconnect the battery or ecu when fitting anyone got anymore info cheers

It's supposed to idle below 1000rpm. 650rpm is what it's supposed to be.

 

Does the engine also run rough when the FCD is disconnected?

 

Why doesn't your auto electrician disconnect the battery when messing with the ECU wiring? He's supposed to.

 

Have you reset the ECU yet?

hi it idled a bit below 1000 before fcd was fitted was never wanting to cut out though i asked him about disconnecting battery and reseting ecu he didnt think you had to. its the 1st fcd hes done or even heard of but its wired up correctly, how do you reset ecu cos he s not 100%sure. so basically to fit a fcd u diconnect battery first then reset ecu after ??????? ive not driven it with fcd disconnected but car was fine before fitting

To reset the ECU you either remove the EFI #1 fuse for 10 secs or disconnect the battery for 30 secs (Just disconnecting the negative terminal works fine)

The battery should ALWAYS be disconnected when working on the wiring, especially the ECU wiring. Cutting and joining live ECU wires is a very bad idea. It's unlikely to have damaged the ECU but I wouldn't be amazed if it had.

 

Anyway, the simplest way to diagnose whether the FCD is causing you problems is to disconnect it and put the wiring back to stock. If the problem goes away you know that either the FCD is faulty or the fitting of it is not sound.

 

Also a fairly common issue with FCDs is that they need a really good earth. You may solve your problems by earthing it to a chassis point rather than to the ECU Ground wire. The bolt that secures the ECU cover works well as a grounding point.
