Remving aerial and swapping for a new one...

I managed to track down a replacement aerial for the Supe which packed up.

Ive managed to unbolt it but cant see how the top piece comes off - this is the bit with the rubber shroud that seals against the bodywork preventing water getting in. Obviously I dont want to damage this piece as I will reuse it with the replacement aerial.

How do I get this off? It looks like there is some silver metal cap that may screw off? Any ideas?

How the hell does the antenna top nut come off? Is there a special tool you use?

You could just tap it round with a flat bladed screwdriver and hammer.

Make sure it doesn't slip. You could get some thick cardboard , put a hole in and slip it over the mast to protect the paintwork. :)

Cool! Just before you sent this I had a go and sure enough I managed to get the nut off and also the mast out.

Then I realise that the replacement aerial and motor assembly ( I got it cheap) doesnt even work (i.e I cant even get the motor to even extend the aerial so I can substitute it)

C*ckballs!

Well thats going back!

You beat me to it! I was going to say that there's a chromed bezel / nut on the outside of the bodywork that unscrews, but I think you've found that out already!

If the motor itself is working, you should hear it make a whirring sound when you turn your radio on. The sound will last for 3 or 4 seconds after turning on (or off) the radio. If it makes a noise that sounds like it's trying to do something, chances are your motor is OK. If not, it probably need a new motor...

The most common problem with these aerials is that there's a toothed nylon cord that runs through the centre of the mast, and this cord can snap after a few years' use. When mine broke, I removed the old mast and the motor from the car. I think it's best to remove the motor, because then you can open it up and remove any old pieces of cord that have been left behind.

Top tip: If this turns out to be the case (i.e cord has broken), make sure you observe whether the teeth face inwards or outwards before you remove the old one. You can deduce it just by looking at how the motor operates, but it's not as easy, and also the official toyota manual actually states the wrong way to fit it!

PS if the cord has snapped and the motor sounds like it's trying to do something, try undoing the chrome nut, and get a friend to pull *gently* on the mast when the radio's on. You may find the old mast will pop right out, which is what you want.
