Big Operation For Me On Monday :(

Recommended Posts

Im home :D got back last night, been a bit of a 'difficult' week thats for sure, spent monday night, after the op, in intensive care. When they opened me up, they found a absess the size of a orange on my bowel (by appendix), so thats whats been causing me the pain, plus i had a 3cm perferation, so im really lucky the op was done when it was. All in all they took 12" of bowel out, and then re-attached both ends. I was really roungh tuesday, but managed to get up and walk a bit. The doc gave me the go ahead to go home yesterday as im able to walk about a little bit now, but am still really sore. Done really well as it usually takes 7-10days before being sent home.

So its the next few weeks on the sofa for me.

Im gonna have a fair battle scar too, the cut goes from just above my belly button down to my pubes, about 6inches, hopefully it'll be really faint once it heals though :).

its good to be home thats for sure :D

cant wait to get back in the supe ;)

All the best with your op mate. After working for 30 years in the NHS as a nurse for 15 years and manager for 15 years I have forwarded your mails to the surgical team who will be carrying out your op.

It may surprise you to know that pain isn't the only thing used to reach a diagnosis and that there are many, many other symptoms and tests which enable a final and accurate one to be made. Also it is easy to take the diagnosis and backtrack to match the syptoms but.. hey, you've done your research now and that clearly beats 4 years training plus huge range of experiences for doctors who need a minimum of 4 high grade A levels to enter training in the first place.

The great thing is that if the team knew the kind of grateful guy you are and your plans for the future they would still treat you with the utmost care and respect.

Also worth mentioning that when they are dealing with yours and thousands of other complaints, they are taken away from the front line so if you have compassion for your fellow mankind I suggest you concentrate your efforts on your rehab.

I trust you are totally fit, have maintained a perfect diet, drunk in moderation etc. and contributed all you can for your own state of health, and that your lifestyle has no bearing whatsoever on the current disease you have.

tere are wastes of spaces across every organisation but most staff, including managers work their tits off to get things right in one of the most challenging and complex areas of work in the world.

All said, I really hope things go well for you and that you are back on your feet and fully operational asap.

Piccies of the bowel resection post op???

Edit: Bit late in my reply but good to hear you are on the mend..

Bit of a late reply, but forgot about this thread.

im not sure what to make of this post, or what you are getting at, but i feel ive more than enough reason to be annoyed at the way i was delt with. Its all very well an outsider looking in giving his/her opinion, but if they had had my experience, they would be slightly bemused, as i am. Dont get me wrong, i've got nothing but praise when it comes to my surgeon, and the docs and nurses etc who looked after, and fixed, me when i was in hospital.

Its the doctors in a+e who my issue is with. I went there a total of 6times in 4months in pain, 4times in serious pain, and EVERY time they sent me home with pain killers, with no follow up. In my eyes, this is pretty serious malpractice, as it turned out i had an absess the size of a large orange on my bowel, which eventually perforated. An absess that size doesnt appear overnight, its obvious to me thats why i was getting the pain i was, and it had just carried on getting bigger and bigger because it took so long for them to spot it. I had a cat scan the start of december, in which they saw a 'mass around my appendix' (which turned out to be the absess), yet even though they knew it was there, they didnt do anything apart from book me in for an outpatient appointment with a bowel specialist at the end of january. By that time my bowel had perforated.

Yes i am fit and healthy, i dont drink too much and i eat well too, plus im not in the slightest bit overweight. What happened to me started off as something minor and due to lack of diagnosis it ended up turning in to something potentially life threatening, which is annoying!!

Found this thread from september which i started.. if only i knew then what i knew now eh, maybe i wouldnt have a big scar!! http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=83843

But anyway, rant over;) .. i feel much better now :D i can move about without much pain at all, but im only just starting to get my energy back, another week or two and i'll be back to normal hopefully :)

Pic of my scar below, just about sfw ;)
