Homer
No doubt matey, I don't question the guy's character, just purely one (fairly weak if I'm honest) example of someone not really understanding what the person asking the question was after. People have massively misunderstood what I was looking for in the thread in question. I am genuinely going to stop posting 'help me' questions as it only ever seems to result in me feeling this way due to certain people. I'd rather try (probably in vain) to figure it out myself! I seriously doubt soonto (or Ian) posted to get a "reaction", they said you need to pinpoint the issue before advice can be offered. That advice is correct and still stands. People can’t always offer an immediate answer or solution, it requires input and action from the thread starter to eliminate or confirm problems exist in certain areas. In that post most of the techies could write pages on possible causes, but what’s the point in them taking 15 mins+ out their day to do that if the simple things aren’t eliminated first? Some tech topics require much more interaction than others, you just need to be prepared to provide answers otherwise people won’t be able to help. Ewen
The technical section is the heart of the forum. It took me a while to see it for what it is, and how important the Tech Section is to the club as a whole and especially to the very knowledgeable members who have built it up and added to it over the years. That section deserves respect from the likes of non-techies like myself, and whilst no-one should be afraid to post up questions there, they shouldnt expect anything less than technical answers. It would be a shame if the Tech Section was dumbed down to suit those (I include myself) who dont fully understand what they are told...as mentioned previously, further explanation can be asked for if need be, but we should realise that the Tech Section is exactly that. VIL
Totally agree, see my post going back a while ago http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=60747 On the whole I have found most people to be really helpful but there have been the odd one or two who love to show their superiority over everyone else and make you feel like a t**t in the process. As I say though, 90% of people here are ready to help and I would be lost without the forum ;0)

Ok, can I just make one thing CRYSTAL CLEAR - I DIDN'T WANT A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO FIXING THE PROBLEM - I PURELY WANTED A FEW BITS OF ADVICE AS TO POTENTIAL FIXES AND IF ANYONE HAD HAD THE SAME OR SIMILAR PROBLEMS WHAT DID THEY DO? Thus the whole point about asking me where the noise was coming from etc etc. Anyway, slightly off topic, the whole point of this thread is to highlight that some people on here like to belittle others so to the people who do this - quit it. A general feeling by the way, no names mentioned!

Fair point, however, when I have posted a similar thread previously it has been moved from Supra chat to tech section, when I know full well most of the replies are going to go above my head! I do understand what you mean and I do respect the people wh ohave built up the section with their years of experience and knowledge, but when it is clear that someone knows little, why talk 'technical' to them knowing full well they'll have no idea what you're talking about? Thats quite an honour:d I do understand what you mean and I do respect the people wh ohave built up the section with their years of experience and knowledge, but when it is clear that someone knows little, why talk 'technical' to them knowing full well they'll have no idea what you're talking about? I know what you are trying to say, (I've been there, and sometimes I've actually felt self-concious about not being able to join in with the techtalk or bring something to the club) but on the other side of the coin, the guys answering you are more than likely speaking the only language they understand...ie you asked a question, they want to give you the best answer they can. I've never personally felt anyone was belittling me, maybe the odd piss-take which I actually thrive on, but I'd rather be talked down to (whilst getting an answer) than ignored. For what its worth, having read the squeeky clutch thread, I think Sonto was trying to help you;)

It was just people assumed I was referring to that thread in particular! I know people try to help, but sometimes try too hard, and the answer is really quite easy. I'd rather only one person replied and said "I'm not sure mate but I have that problem, lets try and sort it out together even though I know very little", than have loads of replies that I don't understand!!!! Christ that was worth wasting 20 minutes out of the evening to try and help you You must understand that in order to help find a problem, small issues must be eliminated first, if they don;t solve then we move on to more complex causes, thats the way tech works. Apology? Crikey all I said was "numbnuts" is that such a crime? He posted a very sarcastic post which I thought was totally pointless! Don't really see why people are making a big deal out of that particular thread when it's not even that thread I'm referring to in this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SuperSupra
Oh and one final thought once again - I am not referring to the thread that people seem fixated on, I am making a general point about the feeling of the forum as a whole. People on the whole are helpful, and will go out of their way to assist others with problems, but some are arrogant, and think they have the right to talk down to others purely because they know how a wastegate works (replace wastegate with any one of a million parts). Just a bit fed up of feeling like a twat on here just because I know less than some. I'll say it one more time just in case some muppets haven't read it for the third of fourth time - I am making a general point, not purely referring to the thread that has been repeatedly mentioned. What would you suggest to solve this 'problem'? It's an honest question. For many it's simple enough to say 'I don't understand' if someone posts an answer in tech you don't follow. Hell, it happens to most of us every other post there (erm, at least hope I'm not alone in this!). Pretty much every time I've said this someone has been kind enough to break it down to in lay-mans terms and in pretty much all cases has resulted in the problem being solved. One thing I've learnt since becoming a member of an online community is not to take people responses to heart, take my 1st posts here as an example http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=16073

It's purely the way people talk to others sometimes, think the people in question really need to take a step back and think "hang on, there are guys on here maybe 19, 20, 21..... who really don't know a great deal, if anything. The thought prcoess seems to be that these people are less intelligent, or not worthy to drive the Supra. I just believe these people (I hope they know who they are or this thread is pointless) should get off their high horse and realise that some (many) people who drive these cars will be put off forums for this reason alone. Anyway, I'm going to bed now as I'm tired and fed up of justifying myself for my whinge tonight. I believe it was entirely fair though and anyone who thinks otherwise, well, you can post anything you like 'cos I'll be asleep in 10 mins and probably not back on here for a while. Might nip back on now and then to check the odd thing but other than that, I've been somewhat put off the whole thing going back a few months now. Take care folks. Maybe I miss something here but I haven't got a clue who you're referring too. Anyone care to enlighten a thicko? I can't believe anyone looks at peoples AGE before posting a reply, to say that replies are based on age is simply ridiculous. However (as mentioned before), if you've not understood a reply due to lack of technical knowledge then simply state that in a reply.. it not difficult and no one will think any worse of you for asking for clarification. We were all newbie’s once (and most continue to be as the tech questions get harder!)
RedM
Technical knowledge? A load of crock bandied about by the 'elite' to make themselves look bigger and cleverer than they really are, except Ian C who really is big and clever. There isn't a problem on the Supra that can't be sorted simply by resetting the ECU. FACT!
Green Peace
Dont worry I'm with you on this... The Snobbery (YEAH YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE:p ), i too bought Supras with little knowledge of cars(my first had a Toyota Warrenty) People didn't really modify them when i first bought mine, I had no reason too either, i just took it to the garage when the washer fluid needed topping up:p There are 'Geeks' on here, bit like the nerdy bloke with the glasses in The Fast And The Furious, Some of them really know their stuff, some of them think they do, and some of them have a small penus ha ha. I kind of model myself on Vin Diesal, i know jack shit about replacing a radiator cap, but i wear Gucci sunglasses...! Though have to say when i have needed advice this site has been a useful source of info, but i'm more into the social element and driving, racing, touring..prefer tto be behind the wheel than under the bonnet...But there are the ones who prefer to be under the hood and im thankful for that when ive needed the help. There are other people on here that are helpful in other ways..like Sheena with her delicious Chocolate cakes;)
