DVD camcorder to PC software?

Homer

Recommended Posts

I've just bought a DVD camcorder but can't find a decent way to copy the movies to my PC.

Once the disc is finalised, I can watch it on the PC using something like WinDVD, but would ideally like to copy the entire disc to HDD. Nero doesn't seem to like these small DVD discs and chucks up an error every time it tries to read it.

Also, is there a recommended bit of software that can convert the DVD to avi or mpeg so it can be edited. All the software I’ve found via google is either some hideous trial version or messes up the sound or video when converting (Might have something to do with the camcorder recording in 16:9)

Windows movie maker is on your pc allowing you to just drag all the clips onto time line and add your music etc etc

1 hr movie is approx 10GB

you need fire wire lead and the card if not in your pc

Lui has a copy of my Santa DVD software on disc

real easy mate this is how i do all my own DVD's the time comsuming bit is put the film onto your PC AS ITS IN REAL TIME creating the movie is easy but save time to pc is long ( 1 HR MOVIE TAKES APPROX 2.5 HRS TO SAVE)

Once saved to "my videos" import it into Santa DVD and click create DVD .... Simple puts it all on a 4.3GB DVD Disc but again takes about 2 hrs,

Well worth it though

Ask Lui for the disc or i can do you a copy and bring to Supra Night,

Or PM me your address and i'll send you a copy,

I've tried movie maker but can't figure out how to import (or open) the moview from my dvd. The movies is stored in what I think is normal DVD format (with .vob file amoung others). Any ideas?

My camcorder is only a cheapie DVD one so doesn't have a firewire or usb connection

OK

Right just try and save the movie onto pc the lot straight off the disc into a folder then import using movie maker, they should all apear as clips then you can re create the movie using what bits you want then resave to pc then you can use Santa DVD to create a DVD disc

Try that remember save time of created movie is long to pc and creating to dvd from santa dvd

well, that worked, cheers Gav :D

Sometimes the simple solutions are the best!

EDit - actually it doesn't work in media player 11, but plays fine in WinDVD

Yeah, simple is good, the difference between the VOB files on a commercial DVD and yours are the fact that commercial VOB files will usually have a CSS encryption key. Programs like DVDDecryptor strip the CSS key out when copying onto your hard drive.

Something like TMPGEnc will be able to transcode mpg2's to avi's and other such things.

I use virtualdub alot for AVI editing as it is simple, and does what it says on the tin, it is mainly for editing and transcoding and does those functions VERY well. Just choose your AVI codec with care and don't try squeeze the codec TOO hard. There is a version or a plugin for vdub which supports MPG2.
