Supragal
I know there are some scottish peeps on here... I have a question. Basically I intend to visit Scotland this year but I really don't know what areas are worth seeing. Intention is to stay for 2 weeks and do 5 days somewhere, 5 somewhere else then 4 somewhere else. So, any suggestions of places, things to do/see etc? We will have the dogs so nothing like day long boat trips/excursions. Stuff like the pretty areas etc. Any help greatly appreciated. Supradoopa
The west side is the best mate, stay away from Glasgow etc too many people too scary lots of people to bump into... must find my dark room now.
martin_a
Whaddaya like? Stirling/Loch Lomond is good. Then you've got Fort William and ben Nevis for the walking and dog excercising. Beyond that you've got Skye and the Kyle of Lochalsh, then you are probably off up to Brora and the wilderness after that. East coast, if you have to, St Andrews, Cupar and North Berwick are all nice. Aviemore if you again fancy long walks to places and you've got the mountains again. Depends what you actually like doing. m.
Supradoopa
Don't mention the East coast, they'll come looking for me
Supragal
Right well I'm thinking the 3 places we eventually decide on need to be no more than a few hours drive apart else we'll end up spending the entire time travelling. I dunno, it'll be a relaxing thing so remote stuff, dog walking yes definately. Not sure what touristy stuff there is other than the loch Ness monster, and that's not even real Equally I expect we'll want to eat out a fair bit in the eves. Gerry
We (four cars) had a brilliant weeks tour last year that MrT organised. Some things to do that we enjoyed were: Loch Lomond visitor centre. http://www.lochlomondshores.com/ Jacobile Steam Train, Fort William http://www.westcoastrailway.co.uk/ Blair Castle, http://www.blair-castle.co.uk/thecastle/highlights.asp Falkirk Wheel, http://www.thefalkirkwheel.co.uk/index.asp The best B&B we found was the the Copperfield Guest House, Culloden rd. just outside Inverness, looks like a big bungalow on a hill, but has an absolutely brilliant restaurant included. Sad you arn't going in your Supe as the roads around there were stunning. Have a great trip.... G
Guest Diematrosen
I'm Scottish, to my eternal shame my knowledge of my own country is pretty poor, however this is just wrong stay away from Glasgow etc too many people too scary . Go to Glasgow, city centre and shop, Buchanan St., Argyle St. etc. Go to the east end (Barra's) (scary but real ), go to the West end, go to the galleries, botanic gardens. Go to Edinburgh for the tourist nonsense, royal mile etc, although the Castle is impressive. Sorry should've been Edinburgh first then Glasgow, then onto Loch Lomond area avoiding the touristy mega bucks bit. Then north east, Buckie,Cullen, Portnockie for the walks and beaches. All sprinkled with a few visits to pubs, especially Glasgow, yeah, you'll get looked at when you walk in but you'll be welcome. Someone else should be able to fill you in with the borders (south) and further north. The central bit of Scotland where everyone lives is really pretty anonymous. Chris and Alana
Loch Lomand is nice, I lived in a village about 3miles from there for 2 years called Balfron (while living with my fiance, Im back in Newcastle now) but it is worth a visit if you like walkes (I guess its more for the dogs) but they will like it too, plenty of ducks and swans to chase. Stirling isnt Far from there either. It isnt as big or Scary as Glasgow (I dont recomend that place) but Stirling Castle is a nice place to visit. We went there for something to do and I quite enjoyed it.
Guest gregg
Yeh agreed, loch lomond is a must....hopefully you will catch a good couple of days there weather wise. Oban is another good one.....nice to have a wee wander round, plenty of shops etc (well i mean wee scottish shops) Edinburgh/Glasgow is a must if you are looking for proper shopping (ie clothes)
Max Headroom
Dont go to Aviemore its a dump, there are better places in the area and you still have all the mountains and stuff.
Chewie
The west is the best. Spectacularly wild at this time of the year. But you need severe wet weather clothing and gear, goretex, boots etc... I love it. Definitely cough... splutter... Scooby/Evo terrain or anything with 4x4. Or you can stick to Edinburgh.
Supragal
Sorry I should have said this is a summer plan... July or something. When is the best month for hedging bets for getting at least some good weather? Ok so loch lomond is sounding promising. Not sure about big towns. Not overly bothered about big shops but maybe for the experience... although Edinburgh might be a must. Superstar dj- boats sound good tee hee Sounding good so far
Snooze
If you're visiting 3 places, I would recommend: 1) Edinburgh 2) Stirling & Trossachs (Loch Lomond) and then either west (for the scenery): 3) Kintyre, Skye east (coastal towns): 3) Perth, Dundee, St Andrews and Aberdeen or north (hills and walking): 3) Inverness & Highlands
Todd
From Oban myself and worked round most of the places mentioned and all good recommendations. This is a good route to take and will take in all the places mentioned apart from the East Coast but I just put in the quickest way back South from Inverness to Edinburgh but you could go via Elgin, not the most exciting of drives but nice all the same. http://www.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=glasgow&daddr=oban+to:Kyle+of+Lochalsh,+Highland,+United+Kingdom+to:inverness+to:edinburgh&sll=56.325675,-3.749084&sspn=1.099556,2.883911&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=8&ll=56.677356,-4.152832&spn=2.178942,5.767822 It's a bit of a haul but the scenery up by Thurso and wick is fantastic, also jumping on a ferry with the car at Oban at island hopping all the way to skye and back onto the mainland is well worth it as well. So many choices:d
sl8ter
i stay at balloch next to loch lomond you cant go wrong heer and i have a dog(no not the wife)plenty of good walks and go to glasgow its very good at all times of the day very good food and the shoping is great and the night life is better
Supragal
Nice one guys, I've got myself a map of scotland so am looking at how far apart the places are. Can't decide about the coast. Was born and lived on the coast so it's not hugely exciting to me, however I suspect it's totally different to the coast lines I'm used to... kslb
I know i'm a bit late on this one but Aberdeen is tops. It is a great location for day trips to Loch Ness, Huntly which is beautifull and whisky distilleries galore. Also loads of castle trails from here. There are loads of B&Bs near by and there is even one up the road from here. I am 9 miles from aberdeen in the country. The B&B is about 1/4 mile away and they are the neighbours. I run a boarding kennels as well so if you want a night out without the dogs then i would be happy to take them. Can visit me at: http://www.theboardingkennels.co.uk
RIJ8631
Wait until we have a Meet, and then follow us - cause we take in half of Scotland on one of our runs (lol) Althought I think we are two cars down, since our last one. Hope you have a good time wherever you decide to go. Cheers Ian
