fastest broadband link

We're looking to transmit large amounts of data between two sites in two different countries at work.

What would be the fastest data transfer you could get for a commercial enterprise?

I mean you can get 8Mb/s residential links for next to peanuts what can you get if you spent some real money?

Depends on the locations but I would recommend LAN extentions, for cost I think they are great.

Available in 10,100 and possible 1000mb depending on the provider.

These are point to point circuits.

EDIT: just read two countries so may not be a good idea :(

Yep, need to transfer Data (100's of M/bytes at a time) between Uk and Italy.

We have a dedicated 100Mbit/s link (optical fibre link) between our 2 sites in the UK. Ideally we want to transfer data at the same rate to italy, but I don't think we'll be up to laying an optical cable across Mont Blanc....

Cost is the biggest thing...

You can get pretty much anything you want, however you WILL pay for it. Multiplexed fibres and all sorts...

Which two countries, as it affects which options are available...

Bugger, ignore me, I just rolled out of bed...

Italy and UK

10Gb, gonna be nice and cheap :D

I know an internet project thats going live soon with 8 of those

Fec me! I used to work for Nortel / Bookham. Didnt realise optelectronics were so in demand still. I just htough once you layed the cable.... well and all that!

Wont be long until we get fibre to the desktop @home.

With the right pipes in place at each end you can transfer what ever you want over the net, BUT for large amounts of data I would recommend a point to point circuit of some description.

Also as an example, a 100mb LAN extention costs a fraction of what a 100mb internet pipe would cost.

I've basically got to approach our IT department with a "we want to do this..." kind of conversation, and I wanted to make sure he couldn't fob me off with any kind of "It's not feasible to transfer this much data over the net".

Cheers chaps.

Probably wont want it to go over the "internet" as such; rather over your private network through the SP; between the two countries. A service provider like BT, C&W, verizon should easily be able to help you out.

What will be crucial is to know what sort of data is it? what sort of latency is it that you require, what sort of SLAs are acceptable to you, etc, etc.

Don't use C&W whatever you do!
