Any Maxdsl experts on here?

Apparently BT use a technology called Maxdsl at their exchanges to control BB speeds up to 8mb.

As I understand things, if you experience a succession of disconnects over as little as an hour Maxdsl will cut your speed right back in order to maintain stability of connection.

This will, providing you don't have line issues, eventually rectify itself and you should get your speed back.

Most IPs seem to think that rebooting your modem/router once a day for approx. three days will speed up the process.

My question is, does it? I'm on day three and, although my connection speed is at the figure below, my connection has been set at 500kbps by BT and their wonderful Maxdsl bollocks.

I should just add that this problem seems to be cropping up more and more with a great many providers. Even my next choice, Zen, have some seriously hacked off users.

What can I do to get my speeds back quickly?

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream

Connection Speed 3264 kbps 448 kbps

Line Attenuation 44 db 13.5 db

Noise Margin 11 db 22 db

They are from my routers set-up screen. It's a Netgear DG834G v2 and if I enter a specific web address and log-in I get to see all sorts of info.

You should be able to do the same. What equipment are you using?

I've got a Belkin 125G Router

so I don't know whether I'm getting reduced rates through the wireless - theoretically I shouldn't but I'm not getting anywhere near the speeds I would hope for with 2Mb Broadband. Downloads take an eternity - took me nearly 3 hours to download the FEAR update before Christmas. and that's only 300 Mb.

Edit:

ADSL Internet Settings

Type Fast

Status No Defect

Data rate 2272 288

Noise margin 23.7 25.0

Output power 19.4 11.8

Attenuation 26.0 14.5

Connection Speed d/l 761.2 Kbps 93.3 K bytes/sec (!) less than 1Mb Broadband and I'm paying £23.44 pcm!!!

So many factors will affect over all speed. DSL MAX will basically give you the best possible connection speed - however there are still bandings - so for instance, they may have bandings at 1152kbps (1Mbps), 2304kbps (2Mbps), 3456kbps (3Mbps), etc. lets say your connection speed is 2021kbps - much higher than the 1meg banding, but too low for the 2meg banding (by only a very little). In this instance you will only get up to the 1152kbps download speed - so in your case, connection speed registers at 3264kbps - probably lower than the expected 3meg banding (assuming 3456kbps as the limit) and so you actually only get the 2meg service.

Hope this makes sense. The whole rebooting your router/modem sounds like nonsense to me - the things that will affect your connection speeds are the Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) and the line attenuation - these will change through the day, every day based on all sorts of things like atmospheric pressure, whether its raining (dampness) etc. There are some good sites that will provide a much better guide on how to see if these can be improved. http://www.clarity.it is a good place to start.

Also - with the Netgear routers, you can switch them into debug mode which enables a telnet session to the box, there's some commands (which escape me now) which will show you things like your maximum connection speed from the exchange etc.

It works like this.

MaxADSL will train over the first 10 days. That means it'll try to establish what the maximum reliable data rate is for your phone line. After that period it will be fixed at that rate.

During this period you may get several lock ups and it is recommended to reboot your router every day to get the best results.

If you have a Draytek router you can get a graph that shows the frequencies that your line is reliably receiving on - it's amazing when you look at this with line extensions on/removed/straight onto the master socket etc. It really goes to show how the line degrades with such things.

Most users will not see above 6Mbps, I've seen some down to 1.5Mbps. Those users were better off using the old ADSL type line that were fixed rate at 2Mbps as the automatic stuff won't downgrade the speed!
