Scooter
From what i've read, it seems to me these two things are the worst things to have occuring in the engine. There have been a few recent instances of J-spec cars, detonating on WOT when running higher than stock (1.2-3bar) boost. The advice given has focussed on better fueling and having a decent IC etc.... .....My question is, if these cars were running as stock ie cats in (0.8ish bar), would the combination of a poor conditioned IC, High ambient temp conditions and say a tank of dodgy/old optimax (95RON) give rise to detonation or high egt's or would you just experience some power loss due to higher intake temps? Basically can i 'get by' with a sh*te IC if i stay at stock boost......
SkyJawa
If the IC is fecked then no mate, you'll still prob suffer probs in the heat at stock boost. Especially with 95ron. I think around the mileage your car done is when I've heard most are passed their best Are you actually suffering DET?
eyefi
most probably. u'll probably suffer a bit of power loss from slightly higher intake temps and a bit of ignition retard. u shouldnt suffer det at stock boost levels from an aged intercooler. Patrick_Devlin
I'd say change your IC regardless of stock boost or not.
Scooter
Neil, like a lot of people it seems, i wouldn't really know if i was getting DET, hence my question to see if i could pretty much rule it out as a risk. Eyefi, thanks, i'm more IC condition aware than when i had my old UK spec car (also stock and with a poor IC) when i ran it without a thought! SkyJawa
TBH - if your getting det you could hear - like a metallic tinkling sound - then thats not good, normally you'd really need some det cans to hear it IIRC.....

I'm 99.9% i'm having no untoward engine activity! the IC is poor but not shocking, the cars totally stock. I'm not getting misfires or eating bits of spark plug every few miles. I'd like a new CW one, so don't see the point of getting a 2nd hand stock one in the mean time if its not strictly necessary.
eyefi
if u where doing track days id say change it immediately. at the end of the day its got a reduced efficiency, its not like yr running without an IC
Geezabloke
Side question? Do you automatically get high EGT's if det is taking place? Dave :flame Dev
MONKEYmark
if you used higher ron fuel like cool blue 106 ron would that stop det and alow you to run safer. is it a combo of an old pump and not too good fuel. what im trying to say for safety reasons would a walbro fuel pump new intercooler and better fuel like 100+ ron be safe and get rid of high egt`s and det or would it be better to turn boost down
dude
Trust me dudes if DET occurs at high speed and boost the cosequences are allmost imediate and expensive , im just replacing the head after having a valve seat replaced and valve due to it burning away , i'll post a pic of the valve up tommorrow , this was caused by too much boost at a very high speed , i have a UK speedo and it was off the clock and hit 1.6 bar for a split second , im running the car at the ragged edge to try and find its limitations and after 3 head gaskets in 2 weeks due to strip downs i now know what i need to to build a decent engine that will hopefully take the abuse i want to throw at the car Dude:flame Dev
