Help requested from kit car owners....

A friend of mine is building a locost kit car.. Been out and got the Haynes "Build yourself a race car" book. It actually looks rather interesting, cheap little project.

The book is mainly based around ford escort mk1/2, which are pretty hard to find. The other choice is the obvious Ford sierra.

My question is, would something like an E30 BMW 4 cylinder BMW fit, or are they a LOT bigger than a ford engine?

Thanks

I assume you meant it was going into your kit car? Just busy doing some research for him, as he isn't a computer person at all.

What sort of gearbox and bits would you mate up to the 200sx for a kit car?

What gearbox would you mount to the vauxhall? I am assuming some sort of adapter plate and such...

a sierra d9 5speed gear box with adapter plate will pair up with a vauxhall [this pairing is used in westfield set up] nothing wrong in ford pinto set up with twin 40's/45's.in my westfield i have a volcun engineered 2.1 pinto ,high lift cam etc ,twin 40's,turning out approx 170bhp.in a car that weighs half ton,you are looking@over 300bhp per ton, gives my uk tt a run for it's money from astanding start.plus parts readily available and cheap

Biggest question - What budget does he have in mind?

Not an unlimited budget, he isn't that much of an idealist... He wants to do it as tight as possible, however he reckons he has around 5k to spend to do it. Doesn't require any tools as he is a carpenter/welder by trade.

That's doable then. Some people say they only have £3k to spend or something unrealistic.

Even having the tools will save him a fortune as I found buying these took a good few hundred quid (engine hoist, decent spanner and ratchet sets, pipe bender, pressure testers, rivet guns, threaded insert tool, a good box for it all etc.etc.)

The Tiger Avon would be a safe bet at that budget and based on a Sierra means plentiful cheap parts and good tunability. My Pinto is 147bhp with Twin 45's, race cam and a little head work.

Nice thing about the Avon is that it comes as a kit and a good start for a novice (although some of the cheaper parts can be left out or negotiated for discount - the rear lights and mirrors for example!)

I built a Tiger Cat and knew naff all about cars before starting.

Escort stuff is getting rare and goes for a premium due to this.

He does not want to buy a kit as he wants to build the chassis himself, I've managed to find the McSorley 7+422 design, as the book chassis is FAR to small for him (He is a very tall lad) and he needs at least an extra 4 inches on the book chassis length. Also the pedal box area on the book chassis is only 10" wide and given his clogs of feet he would struggle with the pedals.
