wile e coyote
Merry xmas guys Just tried to open the boot from inside the car via the cable release but it did not work. Got out and found it had released it but not enough to open had to use the key. Now question is can the cable be adjusted or is it the catch that needs adjusting if so how can i do this ? Jake
Darren, I believe it's a fault with all facelift Supras. If I remember right you have to fit the mechanism from a prefacelift Supe to get it working. I just use the key on mine.
carl0s
Bugger. I'll watch out for this one on mine then. Does the cable stretch with time or something? Mine works OK at the moment.
Jake
I've just been searching for the thread about it but I can't seem to find the one. Like I said, both my facelift Supes have had the same problem with the boot release not fully opening the boot and I'm sure I remember Terry S and Chris Webley saying that theirs were the same. I think someone (Terry?) fixed his with some bits from an older Supra. So yours is OK at the mo Carl? Is yours a pre-VVTi facelift? Maybe the problem is only on ones after a certain date (98+ models?) Any other facelift owners have this problem?
carl0s
Yeah mine's a late-1996 pre-VVTi and it's fine at the moment.
Lewis
mines the same as carlos' in age and model, mine works fine. Looks like a vvti-ish issue

Scooter
me too.....by holding the lever up someone can lift the boot without the key.....but if you get out yourself the lever must come down a smidge as you can't then open the boot
Ewen
'98 VVTi here, and yes, same problem.

Suprash
WOW, cant believe this is a common problem as I suffer this too, its as if the release doesnt quite release properly but what I have is if you pull the release and then go to the boot and its not released properly, go to the release catch again and pull it up harder, seems to release it then ok mine and consequently Im now in the habbit of pulling the release once, and then a second time giving it some harder pull when right at the top, hey presto she then releases to a more 75% of the time........fyi, Im 1998 VVT-i
Jake
That's for the input everyone. So it seems that everyone with a VVTi suffers this problem but folks with pre-VVTi facelifts don't. How odd.
Faye
I've got it too, so is it a 98 onwards thing? I did retro fit a pre facelift lock to mine, but then found the seal on the boot was actually worse and I had a knock - probably similar to the boot rubbers noise that most seem to complain about. When I changed the lock back it went away again, you could also see the difference in the way the rear hatch was pulled towards the bumper. I can't quite normally fit my fingers between the top of the bumper and bottom lip of the rear hatch with the facelift lock, but with the prefacelift lock I had loads of space. Personally I'd rather use the key than have a irritating knock/rattle.
JODY T
I worked on Jakes old White VVTI (Valet and new Engine) and this one did it... However I just pulled it a few times when i wanted to open the boot and it seemed to work then... just an idea...
Steve W
IF it's just cable stretch and there's no 'adjustment' possible (cos it's solidly attached both ends) can't a small solderless nipple-type-thing be bodged on one end to bring back a little 'pull' ?? [like spacing out a clutch cable . . . when you're short of cash of course ] MiserFatS
JODY T
For the time it would take to do that ide rather fit a pre 97 one lol
Guest Terry S
I did indeed fix this on my VVTi with the parts from a pre-facelift. That included the boot mechanism which is superior on the pre-facelift.
Suprash
Terry, but Faye said she got a knock/rattle noise then and a larger gap when shut ? Or as me and Jody said, just pull it a couple of times and its usually ok...........
