Smoking Exhaust? Sign of Piston rings going?!!

Hi all,

Read the Supra buying guide again recently and Mawby advised that various smoke singals from your exhaust mean that a)your vsv's are on their way out b)the turbo seals are going (gone) and c) the piston rings are on their way out too.

I know it's normally blue smoke for a and b, and white excessive smoke for c. I had my car checked out by Chris Wilson only 2 weeks ago and everything is fine, but I'm a little worried about the white smoke I have now.

I have a full decat HKS Super Dragger and I know in the cold white smoke is expected, but damn, if I put my foot down I let of a mushroom cloud at times! Don't think it's ever happened in the warm though.

Anything I can do myself to check, rather than take it in to a garage?

Thanks ;)

yes there is...........its either burning off the condensed water that sits in the exhaust after a cold night or its going to be using your coolant.......so if you monitor your coolant levels for a week or two then no drop in level = no problemo......

If it's not using water, worry not.

You need to adopt my wifes attitude to cars, but down about 6 levels. If it runs and the interior isn't TOTALLY filled with smoke, she carries on. I then get get to fix the meltdown.... Aim for something betwwen that and how you are now ;)

Poor car:( :D

Hey I used to worry about this aswell, On startups mainly in cold I used to get loads of white smoke, a bit like a volcano at times, but after 15 mins idle or a little drive about it all dissapeared.....This is nothing to worry about as like the guys said its probs condensation in in your exhaust getting evaporated,

Test it out a bit, start it in the morning and monitor the smoke levels for about 10-15 mins and see what the levels are...

I never knew about the coolant fluid going low if the piston rings are on the way out, Ill be sure to keep a close eye on that from now on :)

Piston rings and coolant loss are not associated. Head gasket trouble and coolant loss often are, as often are cracked heads and blocks and coolant loss.

LOL Thanks guys. Give me some credit, I've had quite a few problems so far (my cause and fault mainly I know) so don't want anymore,.....yet!

Smoke does clear after about 5 mins of driving, sometimes comes back. Thanks all.

It's fine, if it wasn't I'd have told you, that's how I support a big fat belly ;)

I'm back! In fact, I got scared because there was mositure in the air Chris. :) So, I drove to the shops, picked up a very minging Pepper Steak Slice for lunch, and came back again. The 45 second drive was good though.

Chris - the money you earn isn't to support your 'normal' belly, it's to support the 8 hungry dogs and crazy wallabees you have ;)

I went for a jaunt up to Demon Thieves earlier tonight (got Vicki to buy a cat back Magnex system for her ZR :D ) and the roads were very wet and slippy.

Good Chris and Pete - we can all rejoice safely this time of season.

Yes Pete, roads were very wet here too, RLTC graph was going a little insane at times, but kept off any woot above 3k rpm as it just didn't need it to appreciate the drive anyway :)

I'm feeling good as soon as I get in her, the car that is, not the girlfriend ;)
