Supra vs Skyline R34

To see a liner hit 450bhp you are looking at a good 7k

Not really. An R32/33 can get to about 420ish on stock turbos @ 1bar. The R34 can run 1.2 on stock turbos so you're expecting around the 475ish mark. To achieve this not alot needs to be done actually probably less than a Supra as the stock intercoolers on GTR's are more than up to the job. You'd need to decat, exhaust, boost controller and a fuel control like a FCON or Power FC. Maybe a fuel pump awsell.

You're right that it is never 100% RWD but it isn't far off in normal/straight line driving so it isn't as bad as you think. Running wise a GTR costs more in everything as far as I can tell like fuel, insurance maintenance etc and I'd defo say the Supra was more reliable (or the GTR just made me worried all the time). There's just a lot less to go wrong. If money wasn't an issue then I'd have an R34.

Ah, my bad. I was going on what Peter P said.

Im not saying the 4wd system is a bad thing or anything, im just intreeged and fancy leaning something :)

We have an R34 GTR in the family for the last 5 years, steadily upgraded to hybrids and 1.2 bar.... and they are not as quick as you think. The handling is a lot less driver oriented as well - less involving and a bit unpredicatble yet ultimately safer. They are very sharp and very capable though, and I dare say perhaps safely quicker on real roads. On a dry track little difference.

Money spent tuning the stock cars will see them almost the same from a rolling start I recon, but once you get to 400 brake the skyline tuning costs go through the roof. 400 + requires new turbos, fuel, headgasket, mapping, then 500 is bottom end time. We ran ours at 1.2 on ceramics and it exploded. It was slower than both my bpu supras running at 1.2 with fmic, So I'd say it was around 375/400 atw max..?

they are also appauling on fuel - 17mpg, regardless. 4wd also saps a lot of motorway power - they may be 2wd most of the time but the drivetrain is still turning even if it's not driving...

I was pushed towards the skyline after a sup accident and considered it but 3 supra's on I just can't get excited about skylines.. Every time you get in a sup you need to take a deep breath and concentrate. The R34 is like a normal car - it does everything for you.. where's the fun in that?!

Performance wise it is a tough call (which is testamen to the Supra with its much older design).

Drag/Straight line is the R34's. Ok, with drag radials, the Supras beat the Skylines for best 1/4 miles, but that is not a fair comparison.

On a motorway/high speed roll, the Supra is king. Better aero, amongst other things mean the Supra wins here.

I will ignore B roads etc etc, and just go for the track comparison:

Tight track: Skyline, it may be more lardy, but the 4WD pays its dividends here. Skyline to win, every time IMHO.

Moderate track: Close call, in the dry. Too close to call really. But the Skyline will win in the wet.

High-speed track: Supra. Lighter, stiffer, RWD balance without the traction issues. Supra wins here, and probably would in the wet too with a skilled driver.

So it is so close in the end, that you make your own choice. For me, the RWD fun, and looks of the Supra win it for me (along with the way the needle on the speedo moves after 140mph :D )

Are we talking flywheel or hub bhp? My R33 was about 340 @ the hubs, equating to a little over 400 @ the fly on 1 bar. R34 turbos were all steel as far as I'm aware unlike the ceramics on 32/33's.

As for fuel they are pretty damn poor. The best I got was around 15/16mpg.

Whoever said that they're boring because they "do it all for you" hasn't really driven one before. They're very big cars and they soon let you know this if you take it for granted.

Really? How many R34s have you owned or driven Trev?

None. But like I said; it looks better inside and out, the layout inside is much better, it has computer controlled everything which I love the idea of, little computers to tell you your G round corners and stupid gadgets like that, it's rarer, sexier, more aggressive looking and faster (and safer) in the hands of a numpty. It's better than a Supra.

I guess all cars are different... but our R34 GTR was not all that quick at 1.2 bar. We have not had it dyno'd - and to be honest I think comparing close dino figures is pretty pointless as the dyno machines are all different - you have to put them on the same machine in the same hour to get something close to comparable.

It was also definately ceramic.. I know because he showed us the remains. As the turbo exceeds capacity the heat generated melts the glue that sticks the ceramic onto the metal and then they go bang. The new steel hybrids that are on it now are a bit more punchy, but still nothing amazing and a little more laggy. The R34 ceramics were VERY responsive for a parralell setup..; that I was impressed with, comparing it to the supra run in parralell, which was a lag monster!!

They are very quick, but the bpu supra can be a quicker car in many respects, people just think that skylines are god... they are good but look at the kind of supra you can buy for 16 to 20k...

there is little finess about driving a liner - it's like a viloent shootem up, stamp on this, stamp on that, the supra requires a gentle much more measured and graceful approach... just so much more involving, if not as ultimately quick on uneven dangerous roads.

I've driven an R33. Very nice car, but a little uninspiring after coming from the supra.

yeah that!

They are very good - a better and more sophisticated car in many ways, but they don't put the fear if god in you like the supra does. Nothing quite grips my attention more than the supra - Like a fine, high maintainance girlfriend; if your eye wanders then you'll get the stiletto in the back of the head!

The liner is like the same girlfriend, but instead of a stiletto, she's holding a bedroom slipper... which just doen't have the same effect!

I guess that makes RLTC a bit like good old fashioned tin hat.

I know I'm going on.... but respect to the JZA80 - she may be an old girl these days but many of us wouldn't be happier with anything else. :)

If I had £35k to spare, I'd be choosing between an R34 GTR and a stupid nice Supra!! I'd probably opt for the Supra in the end - I could have it exactly how I wanted and running like a beaut with 35k!!!

If the R34 GTRs were around £5k - £6k like Supras, I'd have one of them easily.

I think you're allowing RWHP drivetrain losses to a RHHP figure there. There's a big difference in my experience.

Where did you get 340 RHHP measured? (Which company)

Just checked and it was 332 @ the hubs, measured at Abbey Motorsport. And from what I remember it's around 80bhp transmission loss because of them running a 50/50 split 4wd on the rollers. To get just a rear hub figure you'd need a centre diff controller.

sorry I didn't mean to be getting on at you. I agree that Supras are extremely quick cars (just not off the mark) as I've just recently found from being out in a friends BPU'd supra which I definitely think is quicker than my Skyline was. Also from seeing 1/4 stats of both GTR's and Supra's you tend to find that the GTR's get better ET's but the Supra's terminals are much higher showing just how fast they are once they're moving. I'm very much looking forward to getting my Supra now :)
