Gearbox or Clutch????

Was driving along today, fine, no problems. Stopped at a junction. tried pulling off, car moved out, then juddered and stalled - its an AUTO!!!! i noticed it had slipped from drive to 2. from then on, every time i pull off from a stop, its fine, but it struggles to change from 1st to 2nd gear, if the revs drop it wont shift, it just shakes and i have to put my foot down to make it change. 3rd and 4th seem ok. bit worrying though. Any ideas? its as if it wants to change but cant, then it just seems to slip in and its ok.....

Cheers

Probably not the clutch, you haven't got one as such. ;)

Not always easy diagnosing a problem on an auto, have you checked the fluid level .

Torque converter?

lol, that's where the newbie status begins to show then.....? im starting to note a few other things, like power steering noises and wobbly back ends (on the car ;) ) - time to take it to Toyota for a full check up you think?

Not what you wanna hear at Xmas but budget for a new autobox. You might want to keep your eye on the for sale section as 2nd hand one's usually come up for £100 - £200, cheapest option really. If you've got future plans for big power, now's the time to import that BL built autobox...

Quick check of the transfluid:

Open bonnet

Locate transmission dipstick (says transmission on it or similar)

Pull it out

Hold it horizontal

Check the level against where it should be on the cold mark ;)

A stuck valve will need the bottom of the trans taking off and the valve removng & cleaning/testing

When you check the fluid level make sure your on level ground ( obviously ) and make sure the engine is running with the handbrake on , shift your box through all the gears giving a little pause between each shift and finally place in N and check level of fluid , But make sure its warm , best checking after you've took it for a nice long run .

If you find its low top up thought the gearbox fluid dipstick !

ok i think im going to have get ready for a new gearbox from what people are saying. question is, do i use this "experience" to convert to manual, or just get the auto repaired? the cars under warranty with olympic warranties so hopefully they'll fix it. whether they let me pay the extra for a manual conversion, and whether they will let me use my own garage is something i need to find out. so to sum up:

1). how easy / cost affective is it to swap auto for manual?

2). Whats involved apart from g/box, clutch, pedal box?

3). is it worth it?

4). has anyone dealt with olympic warranties?

Thanks

Hi i think im having the same problems is it easy to convert to a manual or what is the best autobox for big power???

Hi Dave,

Best is a TH400 conversion here

Next best thing is built / uprated stock based transmission for more sensible money here

The TH400 is literally bombproof but has significant drawbacks like only 3-speed and high transmission power loss so you're best to be pushing a lot of power before you install one.

The built stock based transmission isn't quite so stout but is said to handle around 750bhp with appropriate cooling. You'll also want to buy a high stall torque convertor with one of these to see the best times on the drag strip if that's your game :)

Cheers,

Brian.

:D hi so you think i should stick with the auto as you can proberbly tell this supra is new to me ive had every other jap car going but this seems the best so far the most fun not as fragile as the pulsar which is expensive to repair

Depends what you want from the car Dave as to whether to stay auto or go manual. You can't beat a built auto with big power on the drag strip but if you're into track days it probably makes sense to go manual.

Cheers,

Brian.
