Dilemma...What would you do?

Went and saw a mate round his house last night.

When I went to leave there where cars everywhere in his close making it very difficult to manoeuvre.

While reversing (my estate car, not the Supra) I possibly rubbed the rear bumper of another car that was stuck arse end out into the road.

I moved past it and noticed a small scuff mark on the rear bumper and am now concerned that it might have been me that caused it?

However, I felt no contact and there is no discerning mark on my car.

Do I:

a) forget about it (but feel guilty as it could have been me)

or

b) knock on their door and make it known that I might have scratched their car

If I definitely knew I had done it then I would confess immediately as I would expect the same from someone else.

However, I might be doing the honourable thing and owning up to something I did not do and they could get me to end up paying for a paint job that was not my fault and to be honest something I cant afford at the moment!

What would you do?

:(

It seems from your description of events that you clearly don't know if you committed the scrape or not. If that is the case then it is unlikely to have been you! (or at least the chances are minimal).

Walk away and have a good Xmas. I would be first to say it was my fault if I knew it was but your situation is different and you seem a real honest chap!:)

Somebody did this to my car in the works carpark a couple of weeks ago and drove off without leaving a note or saying anything. What made things worse is that I had paid £3k earlier this year on a respray. So you can imagine I was really p*ssed *ff.

What you decide to do is upto you, but imagine how you would feel if someone did the same to you.

If you came to me and said you 'think' you might have done it I'm not going to conclusivley investigate whether it was you or not?

..and if I know is wasn't you (and it was someone else I can't track down) my response would be the same;

Pay for the repair.

How big a scuff? You should be able to tell whether it was a knock that you would be able to feel (or hear) or not.

Was it one of those things that you had a million places to look, then you look in your mirror and notice that you're actually touching the other car (that was clear 3 seconds ago)?

Thanks for the advice. If it was my Supra then I would definately want someone to own up, and as I say if I definately knew I had done it then I would own up straight away.

The problem was that it was about 11:30 last night, the windows where covered in dew and I only saw how close the car was once I started to move away from it.

Without any noticable damage to my car and the fact that I did not feel a bump or hear any scraping then I cant say either way?

as you say, you can't say either way mate so i'd leave it.

was this car there when you parked yours up? i.e. could the person that vacated your space caused the damage?

My car had the passenger door dinged a while back..

Thankfully I was in the car at the time (in a car park, on the phone). The car that did the damage was a burgundy Citroen AX. I got the blokes details and all sorted now, but as he left a Burgundy Merc pulled up - so if I hadn't have been there to see it, I'd have come back to a burgundy coloured ding in my door next to this burgundy coloured Merc.....

I'm not sure how this relates but something about 'it could have been someone else', stranger things have happened etc.

Oh, and remember;

Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut.

Has the owner of the damaged car got a 'nice' car.

Can't you knock on his door and tell him you're interested in purchasing one similar in such good condition and ask him how much he paid for it? Do this whilst walking towards his car, going 'yeah, that's real nice, how's it drive etc etc" and then hopefully he'll either notice the scrape and go wtf, at which point you own up and mention that you weren't sure if you'd hit it or not and wanted a genuine, honest reaction - he'll appreciate that more. Or you could mention how could the paintwork looks and the mention the small scrape and see what his reaction is, hopegully something like "Na, that was already there". :)

I'd try and rope him in but be honest about the damage youve caused.
