carl0s
OK well it looks like I'll be spending £400 for a ring alone if I want H colour and SI clarity. If I go for high-street quality regular white (H/I colour and I clarity) then it's about half that. Actually, that's for 0.33ct. I can get quarter-caret H/SI for £200. Chiefgroover
Conrad, a little info, as you know, can be a dangerous thing. There are some seemingly cheap diamonds on the market. Most are just awfully cut. Colour and clarity is all very well, but cut is king. If i had to choose between a H, Si1 that was premium cut and an ideal (now thats a very loose term in the trade!) G, Vs2, I'd take the H, Si1 premium cut stone every time as its going to have a load more fire and dispersion. "I" colour is tinted yellow and not worth buying. The big risk is descriptions. How do you know a cert belongs to a ring unless you have the cert number laser engraved on the girdle of the stone? and once its set it usually hide this. Asking a jeweller what colour a stone is - you will get his opinion, maybe even a slightly optimistic one at that. If someone is spending under £1K, then use your eyes as the best judge and dont get too involved in trying a d.i.y diamond dealer stunt as most people who try this end up with a pretty average item. If it's eye clean, nice and white, and very sparkly and you like the setting go for it, it not the crown jewels your buying. On the basis that if you were shown three rings and ask to pick the high medium and low quality stones, chances are you'd get it wrong. Market is full of badly cut stones that describe well e.g. F, Si, but looks flat due to crap cutting. It's not that hard to pick a nice ring, but its hard to satisfy a curious mind that doesnt understand mount fashion costs. Tell you what carlos, I dont do 18ct White in rings, as I dont rate it. However i do have one (had it ages, got it by mistake). From memory its about 60 odd points. Its a three stone emerald cut, with a photo type cert from the birmingham assay office, which I think (can comfirm tomorrow) is G or H, Vs ? , nice heavy shank etc. An average high street would ask £1650, yours for £650-. which is below cost. I just want it out of the way. The three stones go long ways across the finger. Thats seroiusly cheap and good quality. BTW 18ct white is usually rhodium plated, when the rhodium wears off it will look an off white (slight yellow tinge) colour. But thats 18ct white for you. You can always get it re rhodiumed when the time comes.

michael
Why bother? It's the first thing they throw in an argument *sigh* Mental the lot of 'em Edit: Whoops, noticed that's your first post, I mean "Hello, go for it, do whatever makes you happy but get some kind of certificate and guarantee. I'd be tempted to get an independent valuation on anything like that from eBay" or something

carl0s
I bought a small ring, nothing as expensive as the one Tony's looking at though, so I thought I'd buy some cheap immitation diamond earrings - just something cheap like £50 or so - so I did a bit of reading and came across Moissanite. What a con that stuff is - it's no cheaper than real diamonds!

vvteye
thanks guys, just wonder how much for the same ring in uk cost? i though white gold was platinum but now i know it isnt thanks:) The ring can be white gold, but the metal used to hold the ring is the platinum bit. just a smidgeon is needed but I understand it's tougher and seriously reduces the risk of the diamond falling out.
