XBOX 360 - do you need the hard drive?

I am tempted to buy an xbox 360. I shouldn't - I sold my PS2 a year ago because I never used it - but I'm still tempted.

However - I don't really want to pay full retail and was looking on ebay. But I'm confused. There seems to be the XBOX 360 core (no HDD) and the fully loaded thing which has a 20GB HDD and costs more.

Why do I need a HDD? Will it work without it? I have no plans for XBOX live on the internet if that makes a difference.

Also - will it come with the cables to connect directly to my HD LCD? Or will I need more cables?

Without the HDD you can't save any game progress. Either need the HDD or the 360 memory stick/card whatever they call it.

Ah, OK that makes sense.

I assume it has to be an xbox hdd? I have an external HDD I use to back up my PCs. I assume I can't just plug that in?

I'm sure there's a way, but I'm the completely wrong person to ask  :D

Just a little note....unless connected to the xbox live service (silver membership is free) you won't get any game updates/patches/glitch fixes (which they're are a few off as some games have been released to early)

But with a HD TV, it's definately worth it, even for a part time user.

I may have to look into this more then. My internet is ADSL but it's upstairs in the house, and I use it downstairs wirelessly. It wouldn't be terribly easy to have the xbox connected to the internet.

the 360 is pretty much useless with out the HDD.

£240 from Argos, or £270 with 2 controllers and 2 games from HMV at the moment :)

Do it!

That's really more than I want to pay. My preference would be for the PS3 when it comes out - and I also suspect xbox will drop in price after Christmas - although maybe not until PS3 appears - so I'm reluctant to buy it now. After all, I'm not 12 so I don't really need it for Christmas. I can justify it to myself if I buy second hand - but the bidding on ebay is silly and people are paying full price.

I might see if blockbuster rent them out. I know they used to - that would do me for the weekend.

I was right about some ebay bidders being stupid. Look at this auction that's just ended :

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/xbox-360_W0QQitemZ330061659255QQihZ014QQcategoryZ112848QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The title is VERY misleading - but if you read the description it is clearly stated what the product is. 22 people bid, and the winner just agreed to pay £142........

title is misleading however the advert clearly says in BOLD CAPITALISED print that its for some e-book and NOT for the physical item...how clearer can the seller be?

no one will pay that for the info, the guy who won the aution had no feedback. He wont be paying.

I bet a lot do though. If they thought they were bidding for an actual xbox - and they think they won it - they are likely to pay for it. They don't have any reason not to, unless they read the ad more carefully after they've won.
