Mercedes V Class Auto box problem - please help

Hi guys

 

I have got problems with my brothers automatic V Class.

 

The gear lever will go into all positions 2,1,D,N,R and P

However 1st problem that happened was when going in to D the car would not move but if you went in to 1 and then in to D it would.

Now the car does not move when in 1,2 or D, it works in R but only after you move the lever to N 1st.

 

So at the moment i can only reverese the car as only R works, when you put the lever into R you can hear the gear engaging but when you put it into 2,1 and D you can not hear any engagment.

 

Anyone have ideas on what this could be? gear box...gear selector??
