Is my laptop broke or is it a virus?

For the last few months my laptop keeps missing letters out when I know Im pressing them. Its really beginning to get on my tits now which is why I hardly post on here anymore as it takes me longer to go through all the words making sure they're spelt correctly than it does to type the original messege.

Its even worse when you're trying to type up an assignment/report, which is why I made this thread.

I bought the laptop through work, paying back over 3 years and it is garuteed for the 3 years so can just get them to replace it but I was hoping it wouldnt have to go that far as I'd have to burn all my music/videos/games etc to disc so I would have them for the new laptop.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

Thanks

Gaz

When this happens to my clients computers its generally cos they have spilt somet on the laptop and they keys are sticky, just get the keyboard replaced and you should be fine, I will assume your using a dell laptop with a 3 year next business day warranty, they will just come out and replace the keyboard its a piece of piss to do if not let me know and il see if I can source you a keyboard and il fit it for you where u based?

Most likely an old virus like `keyhook` or some other similar varient.

It just looks to piss you off by stopping random keys working for a short period on the keyboard.

You need to get a good (quality, not free) combined security product on the machine (including av, firewall, spyware, etc) and run a full system scan. Something like McAfee Internet Security Suite as this is what we suggest is the best all round product at the moment.

Hopefully it will find the malware and clean it up.

The downside to all this is that if your machine has been prone to external infections then you most likely have other malware such as spyware on the machine which could have opened up backdoors.

By cleaning an infected machine you can get rid of the problem in the short term but if the backdoors remain open then you keep getting re-infected bypassing the security.

If this is the case you need to rebuild the machines opperating system, ie effectively start again with a fresh install.

from the look of it, there will probably be a screw or two underneath, HP are pretty good at labelling them, and you will need to unscrew that, then the whole keyboard should pop out.

But i dont think you need to go that far, as all that will expose it the insides of the laptop and probably not the keyboard button sensor thingys.

trying using a paper clip and carefully sliding it under the affected keys to see if it pulls out any crumbs and stuff.

I had a user come down with a laptop the other week, the helpdesk was shut so I thought I'd help - "my laptop won't switch on" - tipped it on it's side as I took it off her and half a cup of coffee poured out of the vents in the side .

"Ooo how did that get there?" she said....

*sigh*
