Is it worth having an autobox rebuilt/refurbished?

We have a 98k mile car with a dying autobox. We also plan on keeping the car for a good few years.

Is it worth getting the box rebuilt or should we just go for a second hand one?

We've been told that if the box is in the worse possible state it'll cost us just over £1000 for a full rebuild. The odds are good that it'll cost less than that. As I understand it the box and TC will be stripped down, cleaned out, worn bits replaced and all new gaskets, washers etc from Toyota. Basically, itll be as good as new as you could reasonably expect from an 11 year old box.

The work also comes with a two year unlimited mileage warranty! Really, it does.

Worth doing?

i would be inclined to get a 2nd hand one but one thats as fresh out of a car as poss (possibly someone who is going from auto to manual as there seems to be a few)

There are few reported cases of failure even in the high milers, so you are likely IMO to be fine for the length of the 2yr warranty that you'd get on the recon'd one.......
