RedM
We have a 98k mile car with a dying autobox. We also plan on keeping the car for a good few years. Is it worth getting the box rebuilt or should we just go for a second hand one? We've been told that if the box is in the worse possible state it'll cost us just over £1000 for a full rebuild. The odds are good that it'll cost less than that. As I understand it the box and TC will be stripped down, cleaned out, worn bits replaced and all new gaskets, washers etc from Toyota. Basically, itll be as good as new as you could reasonably expect from an 11 year old box. The work also comes with a two year unlimited mileage warranty! Really, it does. Worth doing? Rayman
Sounds like it to me from what you are saying with the warranty. I cant see you going wrong either way tho as autobox failures are few and far between arnt they? Maybe your box wasnt serviced properly in JPN? Prof. Monkey
Get a second hand box! Then save up to have yours rebuilt and then swap them over...
Lucifer
Used. A recon one from us is £1800 inc TC so the £1000 is a great deal! Either way - hard choice.
Chris Wilson
Sounds too cheap to me, I would expect to pay more for a proper recon, and that's at trade prices.
RedM
I'm guessing you only go to the very best places though. The best in their field probably do charge a lot more. At the end of the day if I can get a working box that runs fine for the next 5 years I'll be happy.
imi
2 yrs unlimited mileage warranty......FANTASTIC. I'd go with the recon option.
stupra
Wow, that sounds like a good deal mate, just make sure whats covered in the warranty, some things may not be covered ??.
Scooter
i would be inclined to get a 2nd hand one but one thats as fresh out of a car as poss (possibly someone who is going from auto to manual as there seems to be a few) There are few reported cases of failure even in the high milers, so you are likely IMO to be fine for the length of the 2yr warranty that you'd get on the recon'd one.......
