Road Tax

This probably seems a really stupid question but what exactly do we pay our road tax for... what is it meant to be used for???

 

I ask because on the radio yesterday I heard that the government are now thinking of charging drivers by the mile to use roads and it should be in force by 2015.

The reason for this charge is because they are finding it impossible to keep up with road maintenance etc

As I understood it (but I may be wrong) they are going to charge it a bit like the London Congestion charge but don't know how they are going to prove how many miles you have travelled.

i do around 80,000 a year company car but the costs will be passed on to us in the end

Anyway, it's not Road Tax, it's Vehicle Excise Duty.

 

They neatly removed the connection between paying the tax and maintaining the roads some time ago.

I was under the impression that they only pour a small percentage of what they raise from Road Tax Vehicle Excise Duty back into the roads...spending the rest on non-motoring stuff.

well I guess 99.99% of the money raised goes into funding the illigal imigrants that continue to flood into the country.... and to fund their court appeals for deportation..... and to fund the accommodation, and to ensure they have internet and sky tv in these accommodation centres. (Which they recently burned down and rioted in by the way).

And I guess the other 0.01% goes on ministers who blow it all on hats ! (well, its as good as their other reasons for wasting our money ).

When are we as a nation going to get to grips with this government and say NO MORE?

I know what would be a good idea, why don't we all GIVE our wages to the chancellor and he can give us an allowance back, because thats where we are heading.

Little known fact - we all work for the first 6 months of a year for the government, then after that all we earn is ours to do as we please with - kind of puts tax into some sort of prospective doesnt it?

To answer the first question, road tax was conceived in the 1940's as an additional sourse of income to fund the 2nd world war. It was supposed to be dropped after the war ended, but because no one noticed, and there were not that many cars on the roads then, the government kept it as a sourse of revenue. It is not meant to maintain highways, and nerer was.
