GazzaGSi
I currently have a wireless network set up at home. It doesnt really need to be wireless so I was wondering if I were to connect it up via the ethernet cable would the download speed be quicker? I guess im really asking does having a wireless net connection slow your downloads down? Also, to set up the encryption on the wireless network do I have to remove the network and reinstall the modem and select Encryption On from the start? I cant seem to find anywhere to let me add it on now. Cheers Gaz
Gaz6002
If the wireless connection is 100% it *should* run at your max DSL speed but if there is anything even slightly electical (telephone, microwave, toaster etc) between the router and Hardware then service will be degraded. Hardwiring into the router is a much better and more reliable option HTH Gaz
JustGav
Most wireless connections will saturate DSL/Cable options... in a home environment.. Yes, hard wired will be quicker, but at the end of the day your bottleneck is your xDSL/Cable connection.
GazzaGSi
but at the end of the day your bottleneck is your xDSL/Cable connection. Im on BT 8mb but the line can only take 6mb. Would web pages load up quicker and would my d/l speed be greater if I were to wire the router in?
Konrad
Your network usually works with 54 Mbits speed, when encrypted it can be halved so let's say 24 Mbits - still a way more than DSL speed. Btw - why you encrypting your connection? Wouldn't it be better to just allow trusted workstations to connect to router? your download speed is usually based on what other server can offer (what upload speed on other side), not on your wireless network speed (because most of them now are 54 Mbits anyway). You maximum internet speed will only ever be 6mb, this doesn't mean that in your own home network it won't be quicker, but the 6mb is determined by the distance from the exchange. Not bad for a bus driver Properly setup wireless network should be similar to a wired network (you will hardly notice the difference tbh). Always tune your wireless network to the least congested frequency.
