digital camera for my father

Branners

Recommended Posts

Im after a digital camera for my dad (seems a fair swap :))

joking aside, my Dad wants a nice digital camera, 5mp or 6mp ideally. Needs to be simple to use without 10 million different picture modes, needs to take pictures quickly with as little delay as possible. Type of memory card doesnt matter as he has no preference. Needs a flash and anti-red eye if it has it. Movie mode might be nice but not essential.

So what does everybody recommend? Budget of up to £200.

And herein is the biggest arse ache to solve! You can get multi megapixel cameras these days that seem to come in at bargain basement prices - price of CCD's has plummeted over the past 3 years - so every manufacturer and his son is making them with uber pixels! It is a bastard to get a camera kit on the cheap that will take photos QUICKLY with a decent quality! You are usually looking at getitng a digital SLR kit for this type of deal :( - and that means £350+ for good kit :(:( - that being said, most of the Canon IXUS series are ok (if not a tiny bit overpriced when they first come out) - but even those are laggy when attempting to take good quality photos.

Apologies, no real *decent* info in this post, just my experience to date - and I hope someone can put me right.

Sony T9;

Easy to understand

Long batterytime

Small dimensions fits easily in your pocket

anti shake, less change to get fuzzy pictures

takes pictures really quick

Startup time is less than 1 second, slide the cover open and shoot.

Downside, maybe over your budget? (don;t know how much it will be in the UK)

Get him a Cannon IXUS, John. I've got a little IXUS60 and love it. I've had 'proper' cameras but I never used (or understood TBH) all the functions and features. With the IXUS I just leave it on Auto mode most of the time and it always works great.

You cant go wrong with this! I bought my dad a Cannon IXUS for xmas the other year! He takes it on holidays all the time, great shots and easy to use!

it was the Canon Ixus 50 Digital Camera [5.0MP , 3 x Optical]

Again, I can vouch for an Ixus/SD model by Canon. My last three cameras have been one of these.

I currenty have the Ixus 55 which I bought from this ebay user about 5 months ago: link

I paid about £140 for the same deal.

The Canon is small but has a big screen and it's stainless steel rather than plastic. This particular one is only 5mp but IMO I can't see why anyone needs more. It drives me mad as it is having to reduce the size of photos to post up anywhere.

And most importantly it's a Canon - the best there is.

boooooooo.

Olympus Mju 810 for my money. 8mp and piss easy to use.

it's weather proof and has a built in image stabiliser.

the Olympus Moooo looks like a nice bit of kit and I would probably use that myself, but the weight of praise for the IXUS and the fact that my dad is 68 and wants it simple means I had to go with that one.

The 65 can take two different types of storage card?

My 60 only takes a SD card but that's fine for me because I use SD in my PDA and XDA2. I've got a £30 2GB card in my camera, which is enough storage for like 900 photos. (Not sure exactly because I also have TomTom6 installed on that card in case I need to put it in my PDA)

I wonder if there's some advantage to that other type of storage card. I've never used MMC

You could go for a Panasonic fz7 camera a lot better than the ones metioned so far, 12x optical zoom instead of a pointless 3x, image stabilization for a steady shot. http://www.purelygadgets.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=1770&gclid=CMbTrv6_gYkCFQJPQgodhTbpAA

wow, good option if you wanted a decent zoom.

i bought my olympus because of how compact it is though and if i was going to buy something that large i'd definitely go DSLR (this would obviously blow the budget by some distance though).

I was watching the gadget show on five and they were reviewing digital cameras and said the Canon Ixus range was cr*p

Well they regularly come out top or near the top on most slimline compact camera reviews, so they must be doing something right.
