sdavies Posted December 2, 2006 Share Posted December 2, 2006 Umm, it is like growing up with marketese.. you see how MS have to put Multikey Human Interface 2006™ (keyboard driver) on to things - add specs/models/trade names and enumerate *interesting* features of software (stuff taken for granted) - just a simple example. Then re-brand - are you a fan of Dilbert? I think Dilbert sums up the MS view (or even big corporate view) of life in the tech industry. I mean - crikey - I keep yearning for one ... but I won't dis MS simply for their past failures - they *DO* produce some good stuff. I like a lot of their products to be honest. It is just the whole way they market themselves is comedic on times Thats me coming from a unix/vms(puke)/linux professional background originally and moving into MS with a bit of trepidation a few years ago... Its a bodge job, however - we all use it (certainly on the desktop) as there is no feasible alternative. On the server side it is the same story unless you are a larger company with in-house app developers / support team that can run your business app on a different OS completely customised and optimised for that chosen app. MS have no real competition in the messaging and desktop space and with Vista, LCS and Exchange 2007 they have moved the goal posts yet again. They do have a lrage portion of the desktop audience, but the back end you may find is not so homogenously M$. I have found with quite a few solutions I have had to assess for customers that their solution is quite widely spread across many platforms and standards (oh joy). For example: MySQL married with MSSQL load balanced off an Apache based server (load balanced and served up using a Resin solution) both on Linux boxes talking to an Win 2k server and Win2k3 server - with php on the linux boxes served through Apache (now you know thats gonna hurt). A right mix of standards/philosphies - you just have to be able to abstract and adapt I don't fear any one solution - I like to tackle these challenges I also find good and bad in all areas of the industry with various solutions - but make do with what I see with the inability/time/resource to fix issues myself. Mike Posted December 2, 2006 Author Share Posted December 2, 2006 Glad you enjoyed it Ian I've been involved in a few marketing campaigns where we're started with a nice idea and a simple product and requirements have flown in from everywhere... and what actually went out the door was so far away from what it began as, the whole purpose of the campaign is lost, but a bunch of directors all got their requests satisfied...
